Some CoCs do cover a concept such as Private harassment, but it's a bit complicated to imagine endorsing someone else's derogatory terms at Twitter serving as a reason for which disciplinary action on Stack Overflow should ensue.

They are doing the opposite of what the community wanted and wants them to. But they have now just gotten somewhat better at astro-turfing and presenting their actions as the result of consultation than before. The policies are still basically the same.
| May 13, 2023 at 14:13 | comment | added | wizzwizz4 | I read that at the time: the very first answer is about them not consulting the community, which they are now doing. | |
| May 13, 2023 at 9:58 | comment | added | einpoklum | @wizzwizz4: (Thought I'd answered this, apparently I haven't) - they're making changes mostly in the wrong direction, and not fixing what's fundamentally broken. You may also want to read this question from a while back. | |

| May 10, 2023 at 6:02 | comment | added | wizzwizz4 | @einpoklum There's now public evidence that they're listening and making changes – even to some stuff I thought they wouldn't be changing. Please consider posting a new answer with your suggestions! Preferably by this Friday; a large company's bureaucracy is slow, and it's no good waiting 'till the last minute. | |
| May 8, 2023 at 19:43 | comment | added | wizzwizz4 | @einpoklum The exemptions under Schedule 1 (page 178 of the Online Safety Bill) don't apply to Stack Exchange. | |
| May 8, 2023 at 19:30 | comment | added | einpoklum | @wizzwizz4: 2. Oh. 3. This diagram | |
| May 8, 2023 at 19:09 | comment | added | wizzwizz4 | @einpoklum 1. True – but I can't comment on things I don't understand. If you want details, you can ask. 2. Stack Overflow has a London office; also, these laws tend to apply even if you're not based in the country. 3. What diagram? | |
| May 8, 2023 at 18:50 | comment | added | einpoklum | @wizzwizz4: Well, you wanted them to insert more punishable offenses into the CoC. My opposition is in the other direction: I want to undermine the premise of the CoC, and introduce checks on the company rather than the users. About the UK safety bill: 1. SE didn't mention it explicitly, but ok. 2. Why does it apply to SE, which is a US company without activity in the UK? 3. From the first diagram, it seems SE should be "subject to exemptions" 4. Will read the blog post. | |
| May 8, 2023 at 16:53 | comment | added | wizzwizz4 | @einpoklum I am asking seriously, because (as I intended to mention at the end of my answer) I kicked up a huge fuss in a very confrontational manner, and I was listened to, and they changed stuff in response. Sure, there's lots of stuff they haven't changed, with no reason given (which, given the nature of those issues, I suspect might have to do with secret legal arguments they're keeping in their back pocket), but they're listening. They've even got a chat room open, if you'd prefer to discuss stuff. | |
| May 8, 2023 at 16:47 | comment | added | wizzwizz4 | @einpoklum Here's some stuff about the UK's Online Safety Bill. If you don't want to read all that, Your compliance obligations under the UK’s Online Safety Bill; or, welcome to hell is out of date, but is suggestive of the kind of stuff that's coming in. I know little about the proposed regulations in the countries the CMs have explicitly mentioned. | |
| May 8, 2023 at 13:07 | comment | added | einpoklum | @wizzwizz4: Also, it's the opposite of "clearly explained". Other websites - including web forums and such - are not undergoing anything like this, so what's special about SE? Also, what regulations? What specifically in the current CoC contradicts said regulation? etc. | |
| May 7, 2023 at 17:49 | comment | added | wizzwizz4 | Are there any parts of the CoC you actually object to? Because it doesn't look like you're addressing it. The events of 2019 were bad, but this is almost entirely unrelated to them. | |
| May 7, 2023 at 16:52 | comment | added | wizzwizz4 | The "pain points" are clearly explained, both in the question and in comments: there are new regulatory concerns, and they want to be able to justify content moderation decisions. Is there something that makes you suspect these aren't their intentions, or think the new CoC encourages mistreatment of people? | |
