State republicans are calling on Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s to cooperate with ICE following the arrest of an unlicensed driver accused of fatally striking a baby in a stroller.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday, the New Jersey GOP account pushed the governor to comply with ICE detainers.
“An innocent baby is dead. A mother and another child were seriously injured,” the social media post read. “Now, ICE is seeking custody of the two women charged in connection with the crash. This should not be complicated: New Jersey must comply with ICE detainers.”
The post went on to say that the governor “should cooperate” and “not stand in the way” when federal immigration officials are seeking to detain someone charged with a serious crime.
The social media post also included an earlier post from the Department of Homeland Security.
The DHS post also called on the state to honor the two ICE detainers.
“An innocent baby would still be alive today had it not been for Joe Biden’s DISASTROUS open border policy that released MILLIONS of illegal aliens into our country,” the DHS post read. “New Jersey must honor ICE’s detainers on these two criminal illegal aliens to take them out of American communities once and for all.”
A spokesperson for Sherrill’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday evening.
The crash happened on Aug. 28 at 11:55 a.m. in Jackson. A car hit a stroller carrying a 9-month old baby in the parking lot of the NPGS grocery store on West County Line Road, authorities said.
Court records identified the baby as Yitzchok Rosenberg. He died of his injuries at an area hospital. The boy’s 5-year-old sister suffered scrapes on her body, while his mother was treated for a fractured left leg, according to court documents.
Maria CobonGuzman, 20, of Guatemala, is charged with manslaughter, operating a motor vehicle without ever having possessed or been issued a valid driver’s license while involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash and two counts of assault by auto.
Authorities said CobonGuzman, was driving a friend’s car at the time of the crash. The friend, 22-year-old Ariadna Lazaro-Flores, is charged with knowingly engaging in conduct creating a substantial risk of death to another.
CobonGuzman and Lazaro-Flores were arrested on the scene and placed in custody at Ocean County Jail. Both women are in the country illegally and have since had immigration detainers placed against them, according to jail records.
