Amsterdam rapper Bigidagoe was killed by accident after necklace fight ends in gunfire
An argument over a necklace preceded the shooting in which rapper Bigidagoe was shot dead, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said on Tuesday. The alleged shooter, Shairone S., may have intended to shoot Bigidagoe’s friend, but gunfire seems to have hit the wrong person, the OM alleged.
Prosecutors said S. had been assaulted during the argument shortly before the shooting incident. When the 20-year-old sought revenge, the man he was looking to kill was standing behind Bigidagoe, whose real name is Danzel Silos.
Silos was struck by several bullets, including one which pierced his heart. The musician from rap crew Zone 6 died at the age of 26.
Investigators obtained a large volume of camera footage showing moments before and after the incident during the early morning hours of Sunday, February 25, at a venue on Rhoneweg in Amsterdam. The fatal shooting itself was not caught by cameras in the area.
The footage shows the commotion, but also that S. took a gun out of a car before the shooting, the OM said. He then fired gunshots into the air, suggesting it was not a leap to conclude that S. shot Bigidagoe soon after, the OM said during a hearing in the District Court in Amsterdam on Tuesday.
The shooting happened just before 5:30 a.m. The 26-year-old rapper left a party he had attended that night in the venue half an hour earlier. According to the Public Prosecution Service, S. was at another party that night in a different room in the hall.
At 5.14 a.m., the suspect and his friends came into contact with Bigidagoe’s group outside. “The images show that people are talking to each other. According to a passing witness, there was a discussion or argument,” the prosecutor said. Witnesses stated that it was about a striking necklace that S. wore around his neck.
The footage shows that he gave the necklace to a friend. The commotion then ensued, at which point S. was pushed or punched twice by Bigidagoe’s group, witnesses said.
After the groups separated, S. remained very angry, according to the OM. Bigidagoe’s friend, who had hit S., also had to be restrained. The suspect was handed a firearm. He then ran back to the scene of the disturbance and fired four shots.
S. invoked his right to remain silent and, according to his lawyer, will wait to have his say until the file is ready in a few weeks. The next introductory hearing is on September 17. S. remains in custody.
