3GitHub isn't open source; perhaps you were thinking of GitLab?congusbongus– congusbongus2015-06-29 04:14:40 +00:00Commented Jun 29, 2015 at 4:14

3No I wasn't. Lots and lots of GitHub's resources and features are open source and you can find their code on GitHub. Of course, you can't really run your own version of it, so that's what I meant by premium features. They're basically selling the intranet version to companies. Therefore, I think of GitHub as a combination of open source + premium features.r3bl– r3bl2015-06-29 14:43:38 +00:00Commented Jun 29, 2015 at 14:43

1More "offer a service based on open source" to me...vonbrand– vonbrand2016-01-16 00:36:38 +00:00Commented Jan 16, 2016 at 0:36

2It's a bit disingenuous to call Github open-source when the core of the product isn't open-source. That's like saying macOS is open-source because Apple uses open-source technologies like these: opensource.apple.com . Based on just about any open-source definition, Github isn't open-source.Tin Man– Tin Man2021-05-25 17:37:36 +00:00Commented May 25, 2021 at 17:37

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. gpl-3), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
