+1 interesting point. It reminds me that feelings and awareness are more fundamental than thoughts, being evolutionarily older, (upper brain-stem, rather than cortical).

I would be interested in knowing how some people can lack empathy and pity. But it makes sense from evolution: the only way to fight such people is to be that way. Once the tendency 'arose' (if in fact it isn't just the lack of something), there's no way to eliminate it.
