Digitalisation: FBR’s Rs200,000 cash cap puts pressure on retailers, e-commerce The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in Pakistan has introduced a Rs200,000 cap on cash transactions for both traditional retail markets and online Cash on Delivery (CoD) orders. This measure aims to encourage retailers and consumers to shift towards digital payment methods such as bank transfers, debit/credit cards, mobile wallets, and Raast. Given that over 80% of e-commerce orders in Pakistan currently rely on CoD due to consumer distrust in online payments, the cash cap is expected to push platforms to build greater confidence in digital checkouts. This shift may enhance financial inclusion by integrating small businesses and e-commerce platforms with digital payment systems, reducing reliance on cash, especially for high-value transactions. Logistics and courier companies will face operational challenges as they adjust to handling orders exceeding the Rs200,000 limit, either by rejecting or splitting such transactions. However, reduced cash handling could also lower risks related to theft, fraud, and cash mismanagement. The move aligns with International Monetary Fund (IMF)-backed reforms aimed at formalizing the economy and improving tax compliance through traceable digital transactions. Similar cash caps have been implemented in India and Bangladesh, fostering digital payment adoption. Early in my career at a B2B e-commerce startup in Pakistan serving small retailers, we sold to an extremely price-sensitive market with limited buying power. High inflation often meant one thing: simplify the assortment, double down on hero SKUs, and offer pack sizes that matched weekly budgets. Smaller packs weren’t a preference but a necessity for budget-conscious households. Fast-forward two years, and I’m seeing echoes of that approach here in North America. As inflation and tariff uncertainty persist and as retailers tighten control over shelf space, many leading CPGs are 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒛𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝑲𝑼𝒔, investing behind hero products, and shifting spend toward value brands to protect shelf presence and keep prices competitive in a more cost-conscious market. The difference: higher buying power here means “value” often comes in the form of larger packs and better price-per-unit, not smaller trial sizes. Across both markets, the principles feel the same: 📈 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐊𝐔𝐬 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐲 🛒 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 📦 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭 The goal is shared: help shoppers stretch their money without compromising on what they love.
