1The United States is a net exporter of oil, although due to a protectionist policy that backfired, it's not legal to provide the western states with domestically-produced oil.Mark– Mark2026-03-31 03:25:16 +00:00Commented yesterday

@Mark its legal, with American ships staffed by American personnel. But yes, that's defacto a ban.JonathanReez– JonathanReez2026-03-31 09:53:42 +00:00Commented 18 hours ago

Petrol shot up from $3 to $4 on average in the US over a period of ~2 weeks. I guess it wasn't 'overnight' but it was likewise an increase by 1/3rd.JonathanReez– JonathanReez2026-03-31 09:55:17 +00:00Commented 18 hours ago

@JonathanReez ...my maths is off. We went from about $2.30 a liter to about $3.50 (bear in mind, a liter is just under 4 gallons and a US dollar is just under 2 NZ dollars, so direct comparisons are difficult), but that's an increase of more like 50 percent. I made the classic mistake of calculating from the end figure, not the initial figure.Michael Atkins-Prescott– Michael Atkins-Prescott2026-03-31 19:32:19 +00:00Commented 9 hours ago

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. united-states), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
