4$\begingroup$ The crossword appears to be hiding ELEPHANT, however this uses MARMOT in the bottom leaving the last two spaces blank, and I have no idea what the min/max clues mean. That would mean either 7a or 7b would be a 3-letter animal staring with E, possibly ELK, EMU, or EWE, but don't know what the clue means. Possible (unlikely) solution for 7b: E ast - W est - E ast, but don't know where that would leave 7a. $\endgroup$wing-it– wing-it2017-02-22 21:49:31 +00:00Commented Feb 22, 2017 at 21:49

1$\begingroup$ The way I arrived at the elephant conclusion independently was by lining each word up starting from the first letter and taking the MIN or MAX letter from each index. So for the last row, clues 3a/3b, you put in "SERMOTSE", and so on $\endgroup$Blair– Blair2017-02-23 19:04:18 +00:00Commented Feb 23, 2017 at 19:04

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. logical-deduction), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
