- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2003Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseVetch was still alive because he was simply too stubborn to die. He refused to show any emotion to his master, Khefti-the-Fat, even when he was beaten and starved. As an Altan serf, Vetch had no rights among the conquerers, the Tians. He had watched the Tian army murder his father and then his whole family enslaved and separated. Vetch had little or no hope that his life would improve, but he felt that it was unfair that one of the famed Jousters, warriors who rode dragons, had to make his life a little more miserable. After hauling a heavy bucket of water for a long distance, the Jouster had taken the bucket and dumped the water over his head before Vetch could stop him. Of course, Khefti blamed Vetch for not watering the tala plants and started to beat him, as usual. But the Jouster was not a typical Tian and felt pity for Vetch. The Jouster, Ari, needed a dragon boy to tend to his dragon, Kashet. And so Vetch's whole life was changed in an instant as he was taken to the dragon compound and taught how to tend to the great dragons of the Tian army. Vetch found, to his surprise, that he liked the dragons and the dragons seemed to respond to his care. If Vetch had to be a serf, this was the best place to be, but Vetch still dreamed of freedom and hatched a daring plan to escape from his captors...
I simply loved this book. Vetch was such an engaging and wonderful character that I was really rooting for him the whole time. The secondary characters were also wonderful and I suffered along with Ari as he tried to reconcile his honor with his orders, the great overseer Haraket, the falconer Baken and so many others. I thought that the world this book was set in was quite fascinating and was reminiscent of ancient Babylonia and Egypt. The dragons were different than other dragons in that they were definitely animals and incapable of thinking for themselves, but they could learn some affection for their masters if shown kindness and love. My only complaint with the book is that it was not edited very well and there are quite a few grammatical errors, nothing that detracts from the story, but the editor did not do a good job. Still, I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series to see what happened to all of these new friends I have found!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI found this book quite addictive; I was pleasantly surprised by it. Honestly I was only looking forward to a light fictional read that would satisfy my curious mind, but Joust certainly did more than that.
The story takes place in a civilization that can be compared to the old Egypt; this is a nice change from other books about dragons where the adventures take place in somewhat medieval atmospheres.
In this book we meet Vetch, he is a young boy that has lived worse than a slave for a long time since his village was conquered, fortunately he was found by Joust Ari (dragon rider) who gave him a dignified job and was a great example for him that managed to get him to have the will to live again, and to imprint the image that he is worth it.
Vetch is developed nicely throughout the plot; I was pleased to find myself angry when he was angry and I really felt bad about his past, he is a character that the author managed to wonderfully create and give a defined image. I found myself loving Kashet as if he was a real puppy and Ari is a character that I hope we get to meet again in the other books.
For all dragon lovers out there, you won't regret reading this book.
I will go read the next book now!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thought it was a good story, but didn’t appreciate how often the author repeated obvious things and told rather than showed the reader the story. I will probably read another installment.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf you like dragons and love an underdog story this is the book for you. Filled with emotional scenes and complex characters, this story will whisk you away to an incredible land populated by dragons and two warring kingdoms. Those who know anything about Egyptian gods will see their inspirations in the deities worshipped and revered by the populations of those kingdoms. It's an incredible world and I can't recommend it enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe first time I read this book, I said it was the best book I had ever read. This is my first reread in many years. Its still in my top ten favorite stories. The whole series is excellent, great stories, characters that act like real people and dragons!!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLovely story, evocative of Egypt but with dragons and good and evil and not really evil. In short, another complex, well imagined world that is a pleasure to read
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2013Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI admit, I'm a Mercedes Lackey fan, so buying this book was a no-brainer. I have since reread it, and the rest of the series, many times (I had to replace this one because of wear on my original) and have recommended them to lots of people. I love the dragons in this series, so different from the ones of Anne McCaffery, but just as compelling. And the character of Vetch is complex and very human. Misty has done her research, too, incorporating religion and just enough real historic fact of Pharonic history to make this very realistic, while retaining the fantasy with the dragons.
Highly recommended for the young reader (between 10-16) because they can certainly indentify with Vetch, but also recommended for readers of fantasy of any age!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhile not the book I remember, it is still a great young adult fiction. A good start for series to build a world around.

javelinxReviewed in Germany on March 23, 20045.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story
Format: Mass Market PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is another of "Misty" Lackey's coming-of-age-stories, which she does so extremely well. Vetch, the young hero, is no sniveling lad, but a boy in difficult conditions who rises to the challenge. The setting of Tia reminds of Old Egypt with Sun Gods and all, and is vividly detailed. The storyline runs smoothly without great violence (which I appreciate very much and has nothing to do with boring!), and the conflicts about respect, taking risks, getting complacent after having a comfortable living, of freedom and loyalty -and letting go- have enough substance for another couple of books, which I await quite eagerly.
Writing about dragons - knowing about Anne McCaffrey`s work- takes certainly courage, and I was pleasantly surprised. The trilogy about Vanyel Ashkevron will remain my alltime-favorites from Misty, but this is definitely worth reading.
