Japan’s long-standing tax system that birthed fake “third-category” beers is officially expiring. The final phase of the Liquor Tax Act amendment will take effect in October 2026. At that time, the tax rates for beer, happoshu (発泡酒) or “law-malt beer” sometimes translated as “sparkling liquor,” and new-genre beverages will be standardized at 54.25 yen (US $0.33) per 350-milliliter equivalent. In response, domestic heavyweights like Suntory are reclassifying economy mainstays like Kinmugi as authentic beer by raising their malt content to at least 50%. This phenomenon is called biru kaiki (ビール回帰) in Japanese and roughly translates to “return to beer.”

Why it matters

For decades, Japan’s exorbitant alcohol taxes—historically four to fifteen times higher than in the U.S. or Germany—have forced consumers toward artificially cheap alternatives. Now, as the tax playing field evens out, the economic rationale for “new genre” beverages is disappearing. Breweries are abandoning these cheap substitutes to introduce a new category of affordable, authentic beer, which will permanently alter Japan’s retail drinking culture.

The unified tax adjustment in October 2026 is expected to create major opportunities for both premium, craft-style domestic beers and cost-efficient imports.

By the numbers

• 54.25 yen ($0.33): The standardized excise tax rate per 350-milliliter container applied to all beer-type beverages starting this October. This tax accounts for about 25% to 30% of the typical manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) or the price at a convenience store (which generally ranges from 180 to 210 yen ($1.10 to $1.29)/can, depending on the brand).

• 9.1 yen ($0.6): The tax cut for a standard can of real beer, compared to a 7.26 yen ($0.04) tax increase for third-category and happoshu alternatives.

• 35 million cases: Suntory’s ambitious sales target for the revamped Kinmugi brand, marking an 18% increase from 2025 levels.

• 15 times: The factor by which Japan’s historical beer tax rates exceeded those in countries like the United States and Germany. Germany levies only 3 to 4 yen ($0.02) per standard bottle, while the United States maintains minimal federal excise rates.

• Beer’s share of the beer-like beverage market has already rebounded significantly. It grew from 41% in 2020, when it was below the share of third-sector beer, to 55% in 2024.

Is a nation of famously moderate drinkers paying the highest liquor taxes on Earth just a historical accident of military funding? Long before convenience stores lined Tokyo’s streets, the Meiji and Showa governments treated the brewing industry as a cash cow to finance imperial expansion. This resulted in a punitive double-taxation framework that survived for over a century.

Context

When Japanese household budgets tightened following the collapse of the asset bubble, brewers engineered a loophole with non-beer malt substitutes, soy-protein brews, and cheap spirit-blended “new genre” drinks. These clever chemistry hacks kept retail prices low while shielding working-class salarymen from crippling tax burdens. Today, however, this workaround is collapsing because demographic shrinkage and shifting consumer habits have cratered traditional tax revenues, forcing the Ministry of Finance to rewrite the rules.

Conventional wisdom

Most casual observers assume that Japanese drinkers simply prefer cheap, light imitation lagers because of their refreshing profile and low price. In reality, however, market share for these budget variants was never about flavor preference. Rather, it was an entirely artificial creation of a Byzantine tax code that penalized genuine agricultural ingredients, such as barley malt.

To convert Kinmugi into a legal beer ahead of the October deadline, Suntory removed added spirits, increased the malt content beyond the required 50%, and introduced new branding.

Retailers are also making aggressive moves: home improvement giant Cainz recently introduced a 138 yen ($0.85) imported Vietnamese lager sold as a private label offering, and Don Quijote relies on minimalist packaging to keep its private-label “Passion Price” beer competitive at 164 yen ($1.00) per can. This shift forces domestic mega-brewers to scale up their import pipelines of Canadian and Australian malt to produce millions of “real beer” cans.

Friction point

The impending price harmonization reveals a structural tension for budget-conscious consumers and convenience retailers. While the tax gap is narrowing, real beer will still cost more than functional, low-carbohydrate happoshu alternatives. This threatens to alienate older, health-conscious drinkers who rely on specialized low-sugar variants.

How it works

Historically, the Japanese Liquor Tax Act penalized beverages based on arbitrary definitions of ingredient ratios and manufacturing processes. Under the revised framework, categorization is simpler, eliminating the punitive tax penalties that previously made high-malt brews a luxury item. Breweries can now simply adjust their malt percentages and eliminate artificial spirit additions to cross the regulatory threshold into the lower-taxed “beer” bracket.

Zoom out

This tax realignment is a macroeconomic maneuver to stabilize the shrinking domestic beverage market, which is plagued by youth abstinence and an aging population.

Beyond supermarket shelves, this transition triggers an immediate, second-level shock to the supply chain: as legacy brands like Suntory and Kirin shift their economy lines back to 50% or more malt, the demand profile for agricultural commodities shifts overnight. Japanese megacorps will need to rely heavily on imported Australian and Canadian malt or squeeze domestic contract farmers. This will deeply affect import logistics and grain-futures exposure.

Fun fact

Back when Meiji-era industrialists were first importing Western brewing technology, a cold pint of lager wasn’t meant for the working-class salaryman. It was an exclusive luxury item sipped by diplomats and elites. This prompted government tax officials to slap a steep levy on it to fund military modernization, accidentally locking in a century-long tax penalty that treated ordinary beer like liquid gold.

Commentary

It is tempting to view this tax reform as a straightforward win for consumers—after all, real beer is finally getting a tax break. However, this shift represents something much deeper. Japan’s corporate beverage sector is officially abandoning the “salaryman austerity” aesthetic that defined the Heisei era. Even after dropping to 54.25 yen per 350 milliliters, absolute tax burdens remain eight to 15 times higher than in the U.S. or Germany. Real beer may be making a comeback in Tokyo stores, but this change marks the end of an era in which cheap chemical workarounds dictated how a nation relaxes.

Average rents have hit record highs for the 23rd consecutive month. In response to these skyrocketing costs and shifting demographics, in March 2026, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism removed the “minimum living space standard,” which is saitei kyojyu menseki

suijyun (最低居住面積水準) in Japanese, previously set at 25 square meters (approximately 269 square feet) for single occupants, from the national Basic Plan for Housing and Living.

Yes, but

Historical “minimum living space standards,” such as the 25 square meter benchmark introduced in 1976, were never legally binding under the Building Standards Act. Instead, these standards served as administrative guidelines and policy targets. Thus, when developers flooded Tokyo with tiny wanrūm manshon (ワンルームマンション・”one-room mansions”), a made-up Japanese-English term that translates as “studio apartment,” during the economic booms of the 1980s and 1990s, their buildings operated legally within building codes.

Why it matters

The government frames this policy shift as a progressive nod to lifestyle diversity, but critics argue that it abandons Article 25 of the Constitution. By removing these benchmarks, policymakers are tacitly approving substandard housing and normalizing a race to the bottom, in which working-class residents sacrifice basic space to afford a Tokyo address.

Additionally, as domestic youth are priced out of the housing market, foreign workers are becoming a more precarious and transient underclass of urban renters. Low-wage foreign workers, English teachers, and entry-level corporate “expats” are disproportionately funneled into these micro-apartments due to corporate guarantor hurdles, discriminatory leasing practices, and low initial salaries in yen.

By the numbers

• 9 square meters (97 square feet): The floor area of ultra-compact Shibuya Ward studio apartments. They measure about half the size of a typical studio and one-fourth the size of standard regional homes. They feature no bathtubs and kitchens too small for a cutting board. However, although some lack windows, they often use features like high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling doors to make the space seem larger.

• 112,500 yen (US $692): The average monthly rent for single-occupant rental units across Tokyo’s 23 wards, up 12.6% year-over-year as of April 2026.

• 300,000 yen ($1,845): The average monthly disposable take-home pay for single-person households, leaving standard rent guidelines increasingly unrealistic.

• 30%: The general financial guideline that rent should consume no more than this percentage of a worker’s take-home pay.

• 3.56 million yen ($21,900): The average annual income of tenants who choose compact housing, according to data from the real estate company Spiritas. The average tenant age is 25.

• 23% vs. 19%: The decade-long divergence in which Tokyo rents surged by 23%, while single-person disposable incomes increased by only 19%.

Is celebrating micro-living as chic minimalism an example of historical amnesia regarding Japan’s dark past of cramped housing?

In 1979, an infamous internal EC document dismissed Japanese citizens as living in “rabbit hutches,” or usagi goya (ウサギ小屋) in Japanese, sparking national outrage, diplomatic embarrassment—a humiliation the state spent decades trying to wash away. It appears as though Kasumigaseki has just decided to look the other way by giving developers the green light to go back to building modern “rabbit hutches” under the euphemism “one room mansion” or one of the current labels.

Context

For context, a young professional working in central Tokyo with an average take-home pay of 300,000 yen ($1,845) would have to spend an unsustainable portion of their income on standard apartments. Renting a micro-unit for 75,000 yen ($461) is not an aesthetic lifestyle choice rooted in Zen philosophy. Rather, it is an economic survival tactic that forces residents to abandon home cooking for frozen meals and discard the possibility of ever hosting guests.

Conventional wisdom

Mainstream media frequently portrays tenants of micro-apartments as savvy minimalists who happily trade square footage for taipa (タイパ), or “time efficiency” in Japanese, short commutes, and high-tech freedom. This narrative suggests that young urbanites are voluntarily ditching material possessions to embrace a frictionless modern city life.

Go deeper

The reality of micro-housing involves severe spatial compromises. In a 25 square meter apartment shared by a married couple, standard furniture such as sofas, beds, and computer desks must be eliminated entirely, and closets are often repurposed as sleeping areas. In 9 square meter units, kitchens consist of a single mini-sink, and washing facilities are reduced to minimalist shower stalls.

Friction point

A dangerous chasm has opened between market rhetoric and human endurance. While real estate developers and media outlets rebrand poverty-level square footage as rational minimalism, actual residents experience severe mental and physical fatigue. They note that “being able to sleep there” is entirely different from living a healthy life.

How it works

To maximize urban profits, developers slice single-occupant lots into narrow, multistory footprints measuring 15 to 20 tsubo (approximately 50 to 66 square meters, or 534 to 712 square feet). They use split-level designs, high ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling doors to create the illusion of space. Tenants offset high rents by funneling savings into tax-sheltered NISA accounts, effectively trading immediate physical comfort for long-term financial security. But what happens when someone living in a 9 square meter space wants to start a family or falls ill? They are trapped. Japan’s micro-housing boom creates a highly liquid rental asset for corporate landlords while passing long-term healthcare and social isolation costs onto the public sector.

Zoom out

The elimination of minimum living space targets signals a historic retreat in Japanese social policy. Treating housing purely as a tradable commodity rather than a public good puts cities at risk of accumulating an unmarketable stock of micro-units that will burden the resale market for decades while widening the wealth gap between property owners and perpetual renters.

Commentary

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, before I got married, I lived in several “one-room mansions” in Japan that were less than 20 square meters (215 square feet). Therefore, I am sympathetic to the plight of Japan’s cash-strapped Gen Z apartment dwellers with low-wage jobs who still want to live in Tokyo’s central 23 wards.

Living full-time in an apartment no bigger than a single room in a Japanese business hotel would definitely cramp my lifestyle. Despite their “cost-performance,” or kosutapa (コストパ) in Japanese, it cannot be good for one’s health.

Why did the central government quietly scrap the 50-year-old “minimum living space standard” from its national housing roadmap? This bureaucratic shell game seems like a cop-out to me. The state isn’t just “evil” for doing this. It’s pragmatically caving to institutional land poverty and demographic collapse by trading human space for corporate balance sheets.

What to watch

• Whether local municipalities will step in with municipal rent subsidies or independent housing standards to counteract national deregulation.

• The long-term resale market performance and structural degradation rates of ultra-compact investment properties built during the current boom.

• Public pushback from labor unions and tenant advocacy groups challenging the constitutionality of abandoned housing welfare standards.

The bottom line

Japan’s housing policy has stopped measuring space because the market can no longer afford to provide it, forcing a generation to mistake endurance for lifestyle design.

• East Asian youth, once defined by passive resignation, are increasingly adopting Western-style “financial nihilism1” as an aggressive economic strategy.

• This shift transforms historically stable societies into high-stakes “meme casinos,” which threatens the effectiveness of traditional monetary policy.

• Observe if current “Satori” or “Lying Flat” mentalities collapse into leveraged speculation. Monitor crypto and margin trading volumes as key indicators.

What’s new

Across East Asia, the cultural phenomena of Japan’s “Satori” generation2, South Korea’s “N-po,” and China’s “lying flat” (tǎng píng) are evolving. Youth are not only opting out of the rat race, but also leveraging high-risk assets to gamble their way out of a perceived “impossible” economic situation.

Why it matters

Traditional financial models assume that households respond predictably to interest rates and slow, steady growth. However, as the largest generation in history abandons these principles for speculative “lottery tickets,” the levers of national economic policy—and social stability—may lose their ability to influence the future.

By the numbers

• 51% (global): Percentage of Gen Z respondents (ages 18–29) who currently own or have owned cryptocurrency, significantly outpacing the general population average of 35%.

• Approximately 60% (Japan): According to a December 2025 survey of new graduates (classes of 2024–2027) conducted by BaseMe, about 60% of respondents expressed a desire to be promoted (”want to be promoted” or “want to be promoted to some extent”). However, even among those who want to “succeed,” the reason for that success has shifted from company loyalty to personal marketability—a key driver of financial nihilism.

• 15x (South Korea): The estimated cost of housing in major hubs like Seoul relative to the average household income, a primary driver of financial despair.

• 21.3% (China): The peak youth unemployment rate recorded in 2023, which served as a massive catalyst for the “lying flat” and “let it rot” movements (read on for more details).

• 30% (global - projected): The projected share of the global population that Gen Z will account for within the next decade, making their investment behavior a systemic issue, not a niche one.

• 1% (global): The estimated percentage of day traders who consistently turn a profit, highlighting the harsh reality behind “degen” (degenerate) culture.

Catch up quick

If the “American Dream” was built on the promise of hard work, what happens when an entire generation discovers that the ladder has been removed? Western youth were the first to embrace “financial nihilism,” the cynical belief that saving money is pointless. This pessimistic mindset is now spreading to East Asia’s most resilient subcultures.

Context

In East Asia, “giving up” was historically a defensive adaptation.

• Japan’s Satori Generation: Characterized by “enlightened” minimalism, this generation rejected the obsession with career and consumption. This phenomenon is linked to the collapse of the shushin-koyo (終身雇用・lifetime employment) myth. Japanese youth aren’t just gambling because of housing costs; they are gambling because the “social insurance” of the kaisha (会社・company) has been revoked.

• South Korea’s N-po Generation (N포세대): This group, who are now young adults in their 20s and 30s, has explicitly “given up” on a number of life goals (e.g., marriage, children, and homeownership) due to extreme social pressure. Unlike traditional Satori, they have moved toward high-leverage “debt investing,” using massive personal loans to chase returns. This trend is epitomized by volatile, single-stock leveraged ETFs, which have become a focal point of the South Korean stock market this year.

• China’s “Lying Flat” (躺平族・tǎng píng): This demographic is most closely associated with Gen Z and younger Millennials in China who generally refuse to participate in the “996” work culture3. It has now mutated: “Lying Flat 2.0” involves a more cynical withdrawal. “Bǎi làn “ (摆烂・letting it rot) is a conscious decision to accelerate one’s own failure, while “Rat People,” or Lǎoshǔ Rén (老鼠人) in Chinese, represents total societal alienation.

Go deeper

In Japan, the vibe has recently shifted. Many young Japanese adults aspire to become an okuribito (億り人・overnight millionaire)—a term historically reserved for those who hit it big in foreign exchange (FX) but now rebranded by Gen Z as a badge for anyone who can escape salaryman-dom via a lucky crypto windfall4.

This reactionary trend represents a sharp pivot: tired of the stagnation of the Satori life, youth are pursuing “all-or-nothing” crypto bets.

Interestingly, this trend is not just a Gen Z phenomenon in Japan; it’s intergenerational. The hidden reality is that older generations in Japan are watching their children’s “degen” behavior and, in a desperate bid for portfolio returns, mimicking them.

Ground level

Nowadays, more and more Japanese salarymen, the prototypical Japanese white-collar corporate employees, seem influenced by “Mrs. Watanabe.” Japan has a long-standing culture of retail foreign exchange (FX) trading, often led by individual investors (famously nicknamed “Mrs. Watanabe”) who utilize “carry trades” (buying high-yield foreign currencies with yen). This market is highly sensitive to liquidity and sudden market shocks. Past “flash events” have resulted in the automatic liquidation of retail positions via stop-loss orders.

Salarymen who have burned out are mimicking the “Mrs. Watanabe” FX-trading legacy, but they’ve lost the macro discipline. They trade without an exit strategy, gambling their savings on volatility they neither control nor understand. After getting lucky once, many overestimate their skill and take excessive risks.

Conventional wisdom

Many still believe that the “Great Wealth Transfer” from baby boomers to their children will stabilize Gen Z’s economic prospects, but will it?

• The inheritance mirage: Although trillions of USD are projected to be transferred globally, this wealth is highly concentrated. In Japan and South Korea, strict inheritance tax structures and the high cost of elder care mean that the “Great Wealth Transfer” is statistically negligible for the bottom 50% of households. Parents often exhaust their assets paying for assisted living into their 90s. It is a closed-loop system for the elite, leaving the average youth with debt rather than an inheritance.

• The asset disconnect: Across East Asia, the barrier to entry for traditional wealth building has shifted from “lack of savings” to “unreachable entry prices.” In Tokyo and Seoul, the gap between stagnant wages and property prices has reached a structural breaking point. When the cost of a basic home is 15 times annual income, a traditional “7–10% annual return” from a standard brokerage account is insufficient; it is considered a mathematical irrelevance.

• The retirement reality: While U.S. analysts point to low retirement account participation, Japan’s crisis is the collapse of the pension belief system. The Japanese state pension system (年金・nenkin) is increasingly viewed as a Ponzi scheme by the youth. This has caused the incentive to participate in traditional retirement funds to plummet. Even the most risk-averse individuals are forced to seek “high-yield” alternatives, such as crypto-staking5, simply to keep up with inflation.

Friction point

The “cost-benefit ratio” of labor has collapsed. When the return on a lifetime of hard work is overshadowed by the rising cost of housing, the logical response, from a mathematical perspective, is to stop saving and start gambling.

This is the rise of the “degen” investor. Fueled by algorithmic social media and gamified trading apps, young people use high-leverage margin trading or meme coins as “lottery tickets.” It’s not about investing; it’s a desperate search for a financial lifeline.

Zoom out

We are witnessing the financialization of despair. If AI-driven job displacement accelerates, the pressure to “get rich quick” will move from the fringe to the mainstream. We should anticipate a future where “nomadic capitalists,” who prioritize liquid, high-risk assets over local real estate, become the new standard for the economically disenfranchised. This would fundamentally change how governments tax and manage their citizenry. Imagine a Japanese salaryman who quit his stable job to day-trade from a rented room in a shared gaijin6 house in Tokyo.

Commentary

Having spent a good portion of my career in Japan during most of the “Lost Decades7,” I have witnessed firsthand the damage done to the country over the past couple of generations.

The long-term consequence for Japan is profound. Unlike the more explosive protests seen in South Korea or the cynical withdrawal of “Rat People” in China, Japan’s transition to financial nihilism risks “silent decay.” If the younger generation abandons the “honest labor” model, Japan’s corporate structure, which relies on long-term commitment and steady output, will collapse from within. If Japan’s youth stop investing in the future, the state pension system will be mathematically dead within two decades.

At local izakayas (neighborhood pubs), Gen Z patrons aren’t discussing their promotions anymore. Instead, they’re talking about entry points into leveraged and inverse ETFs or “tangen-miman” trading, which allows individuals to buy fewer than the standard 100-share lots.

We are likely to see an increase in the “gigification” of professional life, a shrinking tax base, and a radical disconnect between government policy and the actual behavior of youth. If young people stop believing in the long term, the state’s ability to fund its aging population will dissolve. This will turn Japan into a nation of high-tech drifters who prioritize immediate digital gains over the stability of physical society.

What to watch

Keep a close eye on the okuribito mindset in Japan. If traditional companies can no longer offer long-term security, expect a sharp increase in retail participation in cryptocurrency, foreign exchange margin trading (FX), leveraged ETFs, and contracts for difference (CDF) trading, even among the risk-averse Japanese youth.

The bottom line

Financial nihilism is not a temporary trend. It is the inevitable reaction of a generation that has realized the traditional economic social contract has expired.

The government’s Office for Reviewing Special Tax Measures and Subsidies (租税特別措置・補助金見直し担当室) has completed the first phase of its work. This phase successfully proved that Japan’s bureaucracy is, by design, immune to disruption. The office recommended terminating only one redundant tax exemption. It chose to preserve established programs rather than risk the friction of broad structural cuts.

Driving the news

Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama is walking a tightrope, trying to satisfy demands for “reform” while ensuring the coalition remains unified for the upcoming budget cycle.

Why it matters

This is a test of Japan’s ability to modernize without losing its hallmark stability. It’s a slow, grinding process that requires the stamina of a marathon runner rather than the speed of a sprinter.

Foreign residents, who contribute to the tax base but hold no voting power, are particularly sensitive to these fiscal decisions. The failure to trim waste means the tax burden remains high to support stagnant, legacy-driven systems. There is no “other side” to appeal to. If the bureaucracy decides a subsidy is worth keeping, your taxes will continue to fund it regardless of your personal economic outlook or local sentiment.

When you see news of “failed” reforms, remember that, in Japan, the process is the policy. The fact that the government opened the door to 37,000 public comments is a significant, albeit quiet, shift in itself.

Go deeper

Between January 5, 2026, to February 26, 2026 a total 37,000 public comments were submitted to the Japanese government’s Office for Reviewing Special Tax Measures and Subsidies. They were characterized by deep skepticism and frustration with the status quo. Although the government requested these opinions to identify “waste,” the public’s feedback often reflected broader dissatisfaction with tax management.

Key themes across these submissions included the following:

• Calls for radical transparency and elimination: A significant portion of the feedback contained harsh criticism. Many taxpayers explicitly asked, “Is that subsidy really necessary?” and demanded the streamlining of unused or opaque funds.

• Targeting student aid provided to foreign students: A vocal segment of the public specifically targeted financial support for international students. Commenters argued that this aid should be redirected to domestic students facing financial barriers to a university education or high repayment burdens for their own scholarships.

• Institutional overhaul: Many submissions questioned the necessity of Japan’s 700+ universities, labeling many of them as “bums on seats” businesses that primarily exist to capture subsidies. Commenters advocated for consolidating or closing these institutions rather than providing them with continued taxpayer support.

• Equity and fairness: Concerns were frequently raised regarding tax inequities. Submissions called for the reform of various tax exemption measures, such as R&D tax credits and NISA, arguing that these measures should only be granted when verifiable results are achieved or when they prioritize domestic investment.

• Skepticism of bureaucratic performance: Many taxpayers were cynical about the entire review process, comparing it to the failed “Project Review” of the Democratic Party of Japan administration in 2009. They viewed the process as potential “political theater” and doubted that ministries would cut their own programs. Afterall, these ministries aren’t just protecting their budgets; they are protecting the “Amakudari” pipeline2. Cutting a subsidy isn’t just an administrative task—it’s burning a bridge to a lucrative post-retirement board seat.

Ultimately, while the government sought data to help prioritize “wise spending,” the public response was a clear signal of fatigue with what many perceive as a system of entrenched interests that prioritizes existing structures over fiscal relief for the average taxpayer.

By the numbers

The numbers tell the story of a scalpel that refused to cut.

• 120: The number of programs reviewed, with only one identified for abolition: a dormant tax break.

• 1.11 million: The number of small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that benefit from corporate tax relief. This creates a massive, politically active bloc that makes cuts nearly impossible.

• 37,000: The number of public submissions received, which highlight residents’ eagerness for change, even if the bureaucratic response is muted.

Is Japan’s “DOGE” model a failure, or is it simply working as designed?

Unlike the sudden, high-voltage disruption seen in the U.S., Japan’s political culture—and its administrative reform efforts—historically favor “careful consideration” over radical disruption.

In Japan, change rarely comes in the form of a revolution. Rather, it is a long, deliberate process of consensus-building. To the foreign observer, this can feel like gridlock, but to the local bureaucrat, it is an essential mechanism for maintaining the social stability that keeps the country functioning.

Conventional wisdom

Observers often assume that if a government announces an efficiency drive, it intends to make deep, immediate cuts. In reality, Japanese policy is often “reform” in name but “maintenance” in practice.

The ministries responsible for these programs also audit them, creating a structural conflict of interest. They are reluctant to reduce the budgets and authorities that define their professional impact.

Friction point

A divide exists between the taxpaying “guest” and the system itself.

Foreign residents are often the first to notice when tax money is misspent. For example, subsidies flow into already-congested tourism hubs like Kyoto.

Foreign residents are the “silent auditors” of Japan. Since we don’t have a vote, we observe the system with a cold, external clarity that locals sometimes lose because they are embedded in the “consensus.”

Zoom out

The focus on “incrementalism” protects the status quo but also creates long-term fiscal risk. If the system is too rigid to eliminate minor waste today, it may struggle to respond when the next major demographic or economic shock occurs.

Commentary

First, keep in mind the following essential backdrop: according to the Ministry of Finance’s July 3, 2026 announcement, Japan’s general-account tax revenue for fiscal year 2025 (which ended in March 2026) reached a record 84.22 trillion yen (approximately US $519.6 billion). This marks the sixth consecutive year of record-high tax revenues. This total represents a 12.0% increase, or roughly 9 trillion yen ($55.5 billion), over the previous fiscal year. However, because general-account expenditures have also increased alongside nominal GDP and price levels, Japan continues to run fiscal deficits and relies on issuing government bonds.

Now, let’s pivot to the U.S., the model for Japan’s DOGE.

Honestly, Elon Musk’s U.S. DOGE initiative was a spectacular failure. By the time it closed in July 2026, it had missed its $2 trillion savings target, generated only a fraction of its promised fiscal impact, and left behind gutted public services and institutional chaos. Musk’s approach was doomed from the start, lacking the necessary steering mechanism.

Japan’s “scalpel” is destined for failure as well, as it is being wielded by the very people it is meant to cut.

Kasumigaseki’s decision to pursue its own “DOGE” through an internal, consensus-based review process implicitly acknowledges that the American “move fast and break things” approach is incompatible with Japanese governance. The risk isn’t that the Japanese version will cause a catastrophe. Rather, the risk is that it will be so politely “incremental” that it never eliminates the systemic waste it was designed to address.

The government’s focus on “self-assessment” is more about managing political expectations than efficiency. This ensures that no single industry feels enough pain to launch a significant lobbying counterattack.

What to watch

Will we see “phased” reductions? That would signal that the process is working exactly as the Japanese government prefers: slowly and quietly without causing a commotion.

We’ll continue to monitor the preliminary budget requests at the end of August because, if those are unsuccessful, the entire “DOGE” initiative will be revealed to be nothing more than a ghost in the machine.

Bottom line

Japan is choosing the stability of slow, incremental adjustment over the volatility of rapid reform—a choice that keeps the lights on, even if it leaves many taxpaying foreign residents wishing for a more aggressive approach to fiscal efficiency.

Rather than handling heavy industrial loads, the 1.4-meter-tall (about 4’7”) humanoid is optimized for precise, human-scale tasks, such as assembly, parts handling, shelf picking, and light logistics. Its five-finger hands, inspired by human anatomy, enable it to use existing tools, buttons, pedals, and workstations, eliminating the need for factories to redesign their environments. Between the lines

Rather than creating an “everything robot,” Highlanders is pursuing specialization. While larger humanoids, such as Tesla’s Optimus, Figure 03, Boston Dynamics’ Atlas, and Agility Robotics’ Digit, emphasize lifting capacities of 20–50 kg (44 – 110 lbs.), the HL Human competes with compact, high-dexterity platforms, like the Unitree G1. This suggests that Highlanders believes the biggest near-term commercial opportunity lies in automating skilled manual labor rather than replacing forklifts or warehouse workers with a single general-purpose humanoid robot.

Can a nation built on human-centric monozukuri (モノづくり), which roughly translates as “craftsmanship,” survive without the people who defined it? For years, the robotics industry has struggled with the “last mile” problem of moving from precise, repetitive arm movements to robots that can navigate messy and unpredictable real-world factory environments.

Conventional wisdom says that most people believe humanoid robots are expensive toys or distant science fiction, perpetually five years away from widespread industrial use.

The collaboration is not just about replacing labor; it is about preservation. Without a massive injection of automation, sectors ranging from manufacturing to gas and electricity maintenance will lose all operational capability. The transition to robots isn’t a luxury—it’s a prerequisite for domestic survival.

The “N” humanoid robot is designed to share spaces, shelves, and pathways with humans, requiring no modification to existing factory infrastructure. It features a unique “data flywheel.” As more robots are deployed, the “Artery” system collects real-world performance data and continuously updates the robots’ “brains” in the cloud.

Friction point

Highlanders CEO Hiroya Masuoka (増岡宏哉) calls it the “cruel reality of the AI era”: winning is decided by the difference between 99% and 100% performance. Developing only the “brain” (AI) or only the “body” (hardware) is guaranteed to fail; vertical integration is the only way to achieve 100-point performance.

How it works

The robots use a combination of “cerebral” functions for high-level task planning and “cerebellar” functions for millisecond-level reaction and force modulation. Through imitative learning, robots can observe a skilled human worker and replicate their tactile knowledge.

Zoom out

If successful, this could be the catalyst for a manufacturing renaissance in Japan.

This is a defensive industrial strategy. Japan is not only automating for profit, but also to prevent the erosion of its manufacturing base. By using the historic Kyoto plant as the cradle for this new technology, Mitsubishi aims to build the future of robotics on the same foundations that powered Japan’s golden age.

By showing that humanoid robots can be mass-produced to the same quality standards as automobiles, Mitsubishi is establishing a new industrial asset class. Japan could potentially export this “physical AI” infrastructure and compete with global big tech in the next phase of the AI revolution.

Commentary

While this news seems promising at first glance, I can’t help but wonder if this is a cost-saving measure for Mitsubishi or if Mitsubishi is effectively subsidizing Highlanders’ expansion. How will Mitsubishi benefit from this new venture?

In any case, I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt because the field of humanoid robots has long been dominated by hype surrounding Tesla’s Optimus and aggressive Chinese startups that have grabbed the global spotlight. Japan has been conspicuously absent from the headlines for years.

I was beginning to wonder if Japan had ceded its robotics leadership to big tech companies abroad. Consider how NEC, Toshiba, and Hitachi collectively held over 50% of the global market share for dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips but later lost their share once memory chips became commoditized. Japan subsequently failed to pivot from a vertically integrated model, where they did everything in-house, to the “horizontal” model pioneered by companies like TSMC. This model separates design from manufacturing and allows for rapid global innovation.

While Japan may no longer dominate the end-consumer product, it remains a global powerhouse in the specialized materials and high-end manufacturing equipment (e.g., photoresist and precision lithography tools) that foreign companies need to build those products. Japan has essentially moved from being the face of the product to being the indispensable, invisible supplier.

Perhaps this time will be different.

Mitsubishi Motors and Highlanders seem to have learned from the DRAM era. They are creating a hybrid model by bringing a “fabless-style” AI startup into a “foundry-style” automotive factory. This model pairs the agility of an AI startup with the “hard” manufacturing discipline of a legacy automaker. It could represent the vertical integration of the next century.

Also, perhaps these two domestic firms will convince Japan Airlines to choose a different source for their humanoid robots, one that is not the Chinese firm Unitree Robotics. See the following article for more background information.

What to watch

It will be key to measure the performance of these units during the initial “data collection” phase inside Mitsubishi Motors’ engine plants. If the robots can successfully navigate the variance of real-world engine assembly, expect other manufacturers to scramble for similar partnerships.

The bottom line

Mitsubishi Motors and Highlanders are betting that the answer to Japan’s population crisis isn’t just importing more labor—it’s building a new synthetic workforce that can think, move, and learn on the fly.

Foreigners have been visiting and trading with Japan for centuries, but from the 1630s the Tokugawa shogunate imposed strict limits on foreign contact. For more than two centuries, European trade was largely confined to the Dutch trading post on Dejima in Nagasaki, while Chinese merchants and a handful of other neighboring states maintained tightly regulated relations.

Following the arrival of U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry’s “Black Ships” (Kurofune, 黒船) in 1853 and the treaties that followed, Japan reopened its ports beginning in 1859. As the country entered the turbulent 1860s, Yokohama rapidly emerged as the primary gateway for trade and interaction with the West, becoming the focal point of Japan’s transformation into a modern nation.

Today, Real Gaijin1 sat down with Simon Partner, a professor of history at Duke University, to discuss life in 1860s Yokohama. As a new treaty port, Japan’s encounter with the outside world became part of daily life there. Drawing on The Merchant’s Tale, Professor Partner introduced us to the lives of visiting foreigners and some of the Japanese people who encountered them for the first time. Professor Partner has written extensively about one particular farmer-turned-merchant named Shinohara Chūemon, who arrived in Yokohama in 1859. Over the next fourteen years, Shinohara witnessed extraordinary upheaval, including foreign trade, gunboat diplomacy, civil war, the collapse of the Tokugawa order, and the birth of Meiji Japan. Through Chūemon’s eyes, we explored high politics, global markets, and the lived realities of food, clothing, medicine, hygiene, opportunity, anxiety, and cultural exchange for Japanese people and foreigners in one of the most consequential cities in modern Japan.

Simon Partner is professor of history, with particularly deep knowledge in the fields of Asian Studies and East Asian History, at Duke University.

Besides The Merchant’s Tale, Professor Partner is the author of several books including Assembled in Japan: Electrical Goods and the Making of the Japanese Consumer (1999); Toshié: A Story of Village Life in Twentieth-Century Japan (2004); The Mayor of Aihara: A Japanese Villager and His Community, 1865–1925 (2009); and most recently Koume’s World (2023), which was the winner of the 2026 Modern Japan History Association Book Prize.

Unlike commercial games bought at stores, ENDEAVORRIDE® is a “programmed medical device.” This means it undergoes clinical trials, regulatory review, and strict usage monitoring. The focus is not on “fun” for fun’s sake, but on “dual-task training,” which forces the brain to process sensory input and motor action simultaneously in order to rewire neural circuits.

Conventional wisdom

The standard approach to pediatric ADHD in Japan has been a combination of environmental adjustments, psychosocial therapy, and medication. The deep-seated belief remains that digital devices are a source of distraction that exacerbates ADHD symptoms. Overcoming this cultural and medical inertia will be difficult. It requires shifting the national narrative from “screens as digital poison” to “screens as precision medicine.” This transition challenges both parental intuition and long-standing clinical skepticism.

Friction point

Prescribing this app is not as simple as writing a prescription. Since the software is categorized as a medical device, only facilities that meet specific, high-level training requirements and physicians who have completed the required developmental disorder certification are authorized to prescribe it.

Patients use a dedicated app on a smartphone or tablet. The system tracks their performance and usage, providing a “Physician Management Screen.” This screen allows doctors to track adherence and progress in real time and make data-driven adjustments to the care plan.

This marks a broader evolution in Japanese medicine, shifting toward “software as a medical device” (SaMD). Beyond treating ADHD, the success of this model suggests that digital interventions could become the standard for treating mild depression and providing cognitive rehabilitation for the elderly. We are transitioning from a world where “screen time” is universally condemned to a world where it is “dosage controlled.”

Commentary

While the excitement is palpable, we should treat this as a beginning, not a miracle. The domestic trials were open label, so there is potential for bias in reporting. As the technology matures, the real test will be whether it can transition from an “add-on” to a standalone therapy, which could reduce the long-term need for stimulant medication.

What to watch

Keep an eye on how quickly local clinics adopt the certification process. The regulatory hurdle is intentionally high to ensure quality, but this creates an initial “access gap” for families in rural areas and at smaller clinics that haven’t yet met the requirements.

The bottom line

ENDEAVORRIDE® is a significant, progressive step for Japanese digital health. It doesn’t replace traditional care; it strengthens it by providing doctors with a new, data-backed tool to meet children where they are—in the digital space.

• Explainer —> The Chinese character or kanji 垢 (aka) is an example of Japanese internet slang that uses phonetic wordplay to imply a negative connotation about how an account is being used. The Japanese word for “account” is written in katakana as “akaunto” (アカウント). Japanese speakers frequently abbreviate words, so “akaunto“ was naturally shortened to “aka“ (アカ). As internet slang evolved, users began using the kanji 垢 as an ateji (当て字・a phonetic substitute) for “account” because its pronunciation is exactly the same as “aka.” However, the literal meaning of the kanji 垢 is “dirt” (よごれ) or “filth/impurity” (けがれ). This double meaning creates a highly specific psychological and visual image. When paired with 裏 (ura), meaning “hidden” or “private,” to form 裏垢 (ura-aka), the combination literally translates to “hidden dirt.” Because of this inherent association with filth, the term “ura-aka“ carries a negative connotation, implying that the account is not used for entirely wholesome, public-facing purposes. This aligns perfectly with the nature of these accounts, which are often used for venting dark feelings, complaining, or hiding specific hobbies from real-life acquaintances. Due to the somewhat “dirty” or unwholesome implications of the term “ura-aka,” if a user creates a secondary account for healthy, positive, or innocent purposes, it is more appropriate to call it a サブアカウント (sabu- akaunto), meaning “sub-account,” or simply サブアカ (sabu-aka).

This trend reveals the inherent tension between our human need for private spaces to vent, experiment, and be “unfiltered” and the architecture of a digital world that demands everything be linked, synced, and monetized. It’s a rebellion against the constant, low-level surveillance of our social circles.

Yes, but

Japanese social media users carefully partition their digital lives into silos to maintain privacy and manage social expectations. However, these efforts ultimately fail because modern algorithms and specialized identification services act as “superb detectives,” systematically stitching fragmented accounts back into a cohesive identity. Specialized background checks are highly effective. One investigation firm, for example, claims an 88% success rate in identifying candidates’ secret accounts.

By linking digital fingerprints, such as device usage, Wi-Fi networks, and metadata, platforms and corporate investigators can bypass artificial barriers and access the “honne“ (本音), or unfiltered truth, that users work so hard to hide. Rather than successfully creating a barrier, these secret accounts provide a richer, higher-value data set that exposes users’ raw anxieties, true desires, and underlying psychological traits. This ultimately creates a more complete and unvarnished portrait than any singular, public-facing profile could offer.

By the numbers

• Roughly 1 in 5 (19%): The percentage of people in their 40s who now have a secret social media account, showing that this is not just a Gen Z trend.

• However, secret accounts are most prevalent among young people, who often have multiple profiles. 39.6% of all minors (ages 10 - 18) own a secret account. Roughly half (48%) of university students surveyed in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area maintain a secret account on at least one social media platform.

• 68.9%: The percentage of female high school students who now have a secret social media account, the highest concentration of hidden profiles.

• 2.45: The average number of X (Twitter) accounts held by Japanese Gen Z users, who treat compartmentalization as a necessary tool for social navigation (also 2.28 on Instagram, and 1.54 on TikTok).

• 80%: The estimated percentage of secret account users whose anonymity has been compromised due to algorithm-driven “Suggested User” features and accidental contact syncing.

• 90 days: The amount of time social media servers often require to fully purge contact data after a user initiates a deletion request, leaving a long window of vulnerability.

Have you ever felt like you’re playing a character in your own life just to keep the peace? In Japan, this classic divide is between tatemae (建前・public face) and honne (本音・true feelings). However, the internet has turned this cultural art form into a high-stakes game of digital detective work.

When platforms like Instagram use “deep integration” to sync your address book, they aren’t just helping you find friends. They are also systematically eroding the boundaries you’ve built to keep your private life private. This means that a single careless “link” could expose your deepest, most private events to the very family members or coworkers you’re trying to hide them from.

Most people believe that if they keep their account private and don’t tell anyone about it, their identity will remain secure. Reality check: In the age of algorithmic surveillance, your “digital fingerprint”—from your home Wi-Fi to your overlapping “like” history—makes complete anonymity an increasingly fragile illusion.

Friction point

The “endless tug-of-war” between Meta’s architecture, which incentivizes cross-platform, multi-account linking, and the Japanese user’s desire to avoid causing trouble for others (迷惑・meiwaku) creates a permanent state of tension. Users must spend a lot of time manually disabling features just to maintain basic privacy settings that should be the default.

How it works

The platforms act as “brilliant detectives.” Even if you have contact syncing turned off, if a friend or ex-partner has your phone number saved and their syncing is enabled, the algorithm can easily “connect the dots,” thrusting your private profile into their “People You May Know” recommendations.

Sunshine Ikezaki (サンシャイン池崎), a popular Japanese comedian, turned a PR nightmare into a massive success when his secret account, dedicated entirely to his love for his cat, was exposed. His popularity actually rose because fans found his genuine obsession more authentic than his shouted catchphrases.

Fun fact 2

Concerns about traceability have led to the adoption of alternative social platforms, such as the photo-sharing app BeReal, which focuses on spontaneity. However, Meta (Instagram) has already launched a direct competitor in this space called “Instants,” a social feature for spontaneous, real-time sharing. This phenomenon has led to some unintended downstream effects. See here for more details:

Reality check

If you have an account linked to your phone number, you are never truly anonymous. Algorithms don’t care about your “private” settings. They only care about data points, and your phone number is the most effective key for linking your disparate selves.

As many readers are probably aware, Meta is currently rolling out a new privacy-focused feature that allows users to create unique usernames, or “handles,” instead of sharing their phone numbers when connecting with others on WhatsApp. This feature is designed to facilitate communication with new contacts, businesses, and communities while protecting users’ phone numbers, reducing unwanted contact, and improving privacy. Usernames are optional and will be unique and not publicly searchable. WhatsApp is also adding safeguards, such as reserved names for public figures and optional username keys, to help prevent impersonation and spam. Although phone numbers are still required to register for WhatsApp, users who enable the feature can identify themselves and receive first-time messages using their chosen username. I signed up and am currently awaiting confirmation, but I’m skeptical that it will make a difference.

Zoom out

We are witnessing the death of the “digital blank slate.” As secret accounts become normalized, companies are hiring specialized firms to conduct “ura-aka“ investigations on job candidates. This creates a dystopian future where even your private musings from your 20s could be used against you professionally a decade later.

Recent court cases involving the revocation of job offers due to social media activity have brought “secret account investigations” into the corporate spotlight. This has forced HR departments to consider the desire for “risk mitigation” in relation to the ethics of digital surveillance.

Commentary

Do you remember when the internet was a place where you could be whoever you wanted? We traded that freedom for a hyper-connected global village, and now we’re living in a real-world version of the film Anon.

In that cinematic dystopia, a visual overlay records every interaction, creating a world where privacy is obsolete and anonymity is a criminal offense. Similarly, our current reality is approaching a “privacy breaking point.” As algorithms become more adept at linking our digital footprints, effectively creating a persistent, searchable “mind’s eye” record of our lives, we are frantically trying to build virtual walls to regain some of the autonomy we’ve lost.

Just as the characters in Anon struggle against a system where being “unseen” is the ultimate act of resistance, we may soon see a mass exodus from traditional social media toward decentralized, ephemeral, or interest-based platforms where identity—and therefore “linkability”—simply ceases to exist.

What to watch

Keep an eye on the “digital legacy” industry. As more people realize that their secret accounts will be exposed after their death, we will likely see an increase in services dedicated to the “pre-death organization” of our digital presence to ensure that our “hidden dirt” remains hidden forever.

Also, watch for the “unlinking” trend. As more users realize that “connecting everything” is a liability rather than a feature, future platforms that prioritize “identity silos” over “identity integration” will likely be the most successful.

Foreigners have been visiting and trading with Japan for centuries, but from the 1630s the Tokugawa shogunate imposed strict limits on foreign contact. For more than two centuries, European trade was largely confined to the Dutch trading post on Dejima in Nagasaki, while Chinese merchants and a handful of other neighboring states maintained tightly regulated relations.

Following the arrival of U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry’s “Black Ships” (Kurofune, 黒船) in 1853 and the treaties that followed, Japan reopened its ports beginning in 1859. As the country entered the turbulent 1860s, Yokohama rapidly emerged as the primary gateway for trade and interaction with the West, becoming the focal point of Japan’s transformation into a modern nation.

Today, Real Gaijin1 will be speaking with Simon Partner, a professor of history at Duke University, about life in 1860s Yokohama. As a new treaty port, Japan’s encounter with the outside world became part of daily life there. Drawing on The Merchant’s Tale, Professor Partner will introduce us to the lives of visiting foreigners and some of the Japanese people who encountered them for the first time. Professor Partner will particularly focus on Shinohara Chūemon, a farmer turned merchant who arrived in Yokohama in 1859. Over the next fourteen years, Chūemon witnessed extraordinary upheaval, including foreign trade, gunboat diplomacy, civil war, the collapse of the Tokugawa order, and the birth of Meiji Japan. Through Chūemon’s eyes, we will explore high politics, global markets, and the lived realities of food, clothing, medicine, hygiene, opportunity, anxiety, and cultural exchange for Japanese people and foreigners in one of the most consequential cities in modern Japan.

Simon Partner is professor of history, with particularly deep knowledge in the fields of Asian Studies and East Asian History, at Duke University.

Besides The Merchant’s Tale, Professor Partner is the author of several books including Assembled in Japan: Electrical Goods and the Making of the Japanese Consumer (1999); Toshié: A Story of Village Life in Twentieth-Century Japan (2004); The Mayor of Aihara: A Japanese Villager and His Community, 1865–1925 (2009); and most recently Koume’s World (2023), which was the winner of the 2026 Modern Japan History Association Book Prize.

Political movements like the Sanseito Party (参政党) promise to restore national pride and prosperity by closing doors, tightening borders, and blaming economic stagnation on the “other.” They sell the seductive idea that Japan can “make Japan great again” by removing foreign influence.

Why it matters

Behind these nationalist slogans lies a neo-Malthusian fallacy: the dangerous belief that the arrival of one foreign worker inevitably takes food from the mouth of a Japanese citizen. The “Japan First” position seems to be that immigration is an existential threat to Japan’s finite resources. By importing labor, the country would invite economic strain, social dilution, and the theft of its national identity.

It is time to look at the math. Japan’s problem isn’t too many people; it’s an empty shop floor. The primary national crisis is an aging population that can no longer sustain its own infrastructure.

The intrigue

The Sanseito folks essentially put forth 5 main arguments against immigration. Let’s examine what they have to say and then present counterarguments one by one.

• Economic Sustainability

  • 📢 Their Argument: “An influx of foreign workers increases competition for limited jobs, housing, and food, which causes wages to drop and resources to dwindle.”

  • 🫷 Yes, but: This is a zero-sum misconception. Japan’s working-age population is shrinking. With an old-age dependency ratio of 49%, the economy has reached a structural ceiling. Despite having 2.6 million foreign workers, labor shortages remain at “bubble-era” levels, with 1.74 job openings per applicant. Immigration doesn’t replace Japanese workers; it fills vacant positions that would otherwise lead to business closures and service failures.

  • ⚠️ The bottom line: Japan’s economic crisis is not the result of “too many people,” but rather the mathematical reality of “too few.” With an old-age dependency ratio of 49%, immigration is not a luxury; it is the only viable way to maintain basic services and infrastructure for a modern economy.

• Technology as a Substitute

  • 📢 Their Argument: “We don’t need immigrants because Japan is a world leader in robotics and AI. Automation will bridge our labor gap and render human labor obsolete.”

  • 🫷 Yes, but: This is a techno-optimist bias. While technology can increase efficiency, it cannot replace human labor in “high-touch” sectors such as eldercare, specialized agriculture, and social services.

    Hear from someone on the front lines. Foreign care workers are not just filling marginal gaps; they are now structurally embedded in Japan’s elder care system. Meet “Anna,” a licensed caregiver from the Philippines who works at an elderly care facility in Osaka. In Anna’s facility, the majority of staff are foreign. In the four years she has worked there, she has not seen a single new Japanese care worker join—a fact that strongly signals a collapse in the domestic labor supply for this sector. Her observation that younger Japanese workers are largely unwilling to enter the caregiving field reinforces this idea, leaving “heavy lifting” (both literal and operational) to foreign staff.

    Despite decades of heavy investment in robotics, eldercare staffing is currently declining. Productivity gains complement human labor but do not replace it.

    Anna sees the limits of AI every day. While robots can lift patients, monitor vital signs, and remind residents to take their medication, they cannot recognize loneliness in a grandmother’s eyes, calm a frightened dementia patient with a reassuring touch, or earn the trust that develops after months of daily interaction. As Japan’s elderly population continues to grow, technology will support caregivers, not replace them. The country’s greatest shortage is not robots, but compassionate people willing to care for others.

  • ⚠️ The bottom line: The “techno-optimist” belief that automation will eliminate the need for human labor is a dangerous fantasy. AI and robotics are powerful efficiency tools, but they cannot perform the high-touch, empathetic, and system-maintenance roles that constitute the backbone of an aging society. Treating technology as a complete substitute for human immigration is like confusing a performance enhancer with a life-support system.

• On Social Cohesion

  • 📢 Their Argument: “Our safety and social harmony depend on ethnic and cultural homogeneity. An influx of foreigners will inevitably increase crime and erode our unique ishindenshin (以心伝心), or implicit social trust.”

  • 🫷 Yes, but: There is no empirical data that supports this assertion. In fact, crime statistics indicate that foreign residents in Japan are statistically less likely to be involved in criminal activity than the domestic average. True social cohesion is built on the rule of law and civic values, not ethnic sameness. By failing to integrate foreign residents, the movement is creating a class of people who feel alienated and who embody the very instability that it claims to fear.

  • ⚠️ The bottom line: Claims that immigration erodes social harmony are unsupported by evidence. In fact, crime statistics show that foreign residents are more likely to obey the law than the domestic average. Real social cohesion in 2026 relies on shared civic values and the rule of law, not ethnic homogeneity. Isolationism creates the very instability the movement claims to prevent.

• On the “Guest Worker” Model

  • 📢 Their Argument: “Foreign workers should be treated as temporary ‘industrial assets’ who are here to fulfill short-term labor needs and then return home to prevent the dilution of our culture.”

  • 🫷 Yes, but: Treating labor as temporary creates economic waste. High turnover requires businesses to constantly cycle through recruiting and retraining costs, which prevents them from investing in long-term productivity. Denying foreign residents a path to community and permanence ensures they remain uninvested, creating the economic and social volatility that the “Japan First” movement claims to despise.

  • ⚠️ The bottom line: Treating foreign workers as disposable “industrial assets” is an economic and strategic error. High labor turnover destroys productivity and forces businesses to perpetually shoulder the costs of recruitment and retraining. Long-term integration is not a cultural threat; it is a prerequisite for economic stability and business growth in aging Japan.

    

• On Land and Resource Sovereignty

  • 📢 Their Argument: “Foreigners are buying up Japanese land, water rights, and luxury assets, selling our national sovereignty to the highest bidder. We are losing control of our own soil.”

  • 🫷 Yes, but: This is a textbook populist diversion—a way to manufacture an external villain to distract from the reality of domestic institutional speculation.

    • The Projection Trap: The “Japan First” movement targets foreign buyers to avoid a difficult conversation about the domestic forces driving up housing costs. In reality, the dramatic rise in central Tokyo property prices is driven primarily by domestic institutional capital, including major Japanese insurance companies, banks, and real estate funds, all of which are seeking yield in an era of low interest rates.

    • The “Foreign” Scapegoat: High-profile luxury acquisitions by foreign entities represent a negligible fraction of the total market volume. By focusing on these outliers, proponents of the “Japan First” narrative divert attention from the massive domestic financial giants that are pricing average Japanese families out of the market.

    • The Real Architect: The primary driver of land value inflation is domestic policy, not “foreign sovereignty.” Zoning deregulation and government-backed urban redevelopment projects are the actual engines of price surges.

      One example is Tokyo’s Urban Redevelopment Special District program (都市再生特別地区). Through this initiative, the Japanese government grants developers exemptions from conventional zoning regulations, such as higher floor-area ratios and taller building limits, in exchange for projects that include public amenities, transportation improvements, or mixed-use developments. Landmark projects such as Azabudai Hills and Toranomon Hills have significantly increased surrounding land values, primarily benefiting domestic developers, investors, and landowners. These price increases are driven not by foreign buyers, but by government policy and domestic redevelopment incentives, which have become major engines of land value appreciation in central Tokyo.

      The government and domestic developers are aggressively driving these market shifts to maximize capital returns. Yet, the movement prefers to blame foreigners rather than the domestic developers with whom they are politically aligned.

  • ⚠️ The bottom line: The narrative of “foreign land grabs” is a populist shell game. Real price inflation in Tokyo is driven by domestic institutional speculation and government-backed redevelopment, not foreign buyers. By blaming “foreigners” for rising costs, the “Japan First” movement provides political cover for the domestic financial interests that are hollowing out the middle class.

• Overall

  • 📢 Their Argument: Japan must isolate itself to survive.

  • 🫷 Yes, but: Isolation is the country’s greatest risk. Japan’s economic survival depends on an “evidence-first” policy. Immigration should be treated as an essential shock absorber for the ongoing structural demographic crisis. To ensure the country’s long-term prosperity, Japanese politicians must abandon their fixation on the size of the resident foreign population and address critical labor shortages that are essential to maintaining the country’s functioning.

  • ⚠️ The bottom line: The “Japan First” movement creates a false dichotomy between national pride and survival. Their arguments rely on neo-Malthusian fears and “techno-optimist” delusions that cannot withstand empirical scrutiny. To secure Japan’s future, its leaders must stop basing policies on the myths of an isolationist past. They must instead build an “evidence-first” framework that acknowledges the vital role of human capital in modern, aging Japan.

Commentary

Historically, Japan’s strength has been its ability to absorb, refine, and integrate. The Sanseido Party and other groups clinging to an isolationist myth aren’t protecting Japan; they’re accelerating its decline. Plus, hardworking, taxpaying foreign residents have a lot to offer Japan besides their labor.

Foreign residents should be aware that their guest status is provisional and based on their commitment to contributing positively to a more pluralistic Japan. In turn, the Japanese government should provide a pathway to long-term settlement in exchange for their participation in the labor market and their contributions to solving various problems and participating in society. An “evidence-first” policy acknowledges that foreign workers do not threaten domestic resources. Instead, they are the essential shock absorbers keeping the lights on in an aging nation.

• About 2/3 (68.3%): As of 2022, the percentage of homes without balconies that officially adopted dedicated laundry rooms for indoor clothes drying.

For decades traditional Japanese-style rooms with tatami mats were standard architectural features. Originally, these rooms served multiple formal and social functions. They were used for holding memorial services, accommodating overnight guests, and performing traditional rituals. However, as lifestyles have evolved, the practical necessity of such static, guest-centric spaces has waned. Today, many homeowners prefer the efficiency of directing guests to nearby hotels or utilizing more versatile living areas.

• Explainer —> A traditional Japanese-style room has historically been the preferred setting for memorial services because it serves as the ritual center of the home. It traditionally houses a butsudan (仏壇), a Buddhist altar that bridges the living and the deceased.

  

  Many families have used this room for otsuya (お通夜), which refers to the equivalent of a wake. Family and close friends traditionally spent the night together with the deceased in the same room, keeping a vigil and enjoying a final period of companionship before cremation. While many families now hold the otsuya at a funeral home, the term still carries the history of that overnight vigil.

  

  The room’s calming natural elements, such as tatami mats and shoji screens, create a serene atmosphere for this final vigil. Meanwhile, the tokonoma (床の間), a recessed, slightly elevated alcove, offers a space to honor the deceased. The room’s formal status as a reception area, combined with its flexible, open layout and comfortable, traditional seating, makes it the most culturally appropriate and practical space for families to receive mourners and conduct rites during this transition.

In addition, for decades the prevailing view held that a “proper” home required a dedicated guest room and a sunny balcony for laundry.

Ten trends are currently redefining Japanese living spaces:

• (1) Energy self-sufficiency is now the standard: Energy has become a fundamental infrastructure question rather than merely a concern about utility bills. Driven by rising energy costs and the mandatory implementation of energy-saving standards in 2025, Net Zero Energy House Plus (ZEH+) systems, which combine solar power with battery storage, have moved from niche performance features to the absolute baseline for new homes.

  

  • Explainer —> A Net Zero Energy House Plus (ZEH+) system is designed to reduce a home’s annual energy consumption to net zero. ZEH+ homes combine high-performance insulation, energy-efficient appliances, heat pump systems, rooftop solar panels, a home battery, home energy management systems (HEMS), and electric vehicle charging or vehicle-to-home (V2H) capability. These features further reduce energy demand, increase renewable energy generation, and improve resilience during power outages. Compared to a standard ZEH home, a ZEH+ home provides greater energy independence, lower operating costs, reduced carbon emissions, and improved disaster preparedness. This makes it a vital part of Japan’s plan to encourage sustainable, low-carbon, and energy-resilient housing.

• (2) Indoor laundry rooms are replacing outdoor balconies: The “taipa” (time performance) mindset is reshaping floor plans as dual-income families seek to streamline their daily workflows. Balconies are increasingly viewed as high-maintenance, dust-collecting relics, prompting a surge in demand for dedicated indoor laundry rooms.

• (3) Soft edges and “wabi-sabi” fusion: In reaction to the sterile modernism that previously defined residential architecture, there has been a clear shift toward an organic, soothing aesthetic. Homeowners are attempting to mitigate the visual stress of the digital age by incorporating arched ceilings, curved kitchen corners, and a blend of Scandinavian and Japanese design elements — a movement often referred to as Japandi. Japandi is defined by the fusion of Japanese rustic minimalism and Scandinavian functionality. It focuses on clean lines, bright spaces, and natural materials to cultivate a sense of inner calm.

• (4) Move beyond plants to “breathing” walls: The era of adding potted plants solely for aesthetic greenery is fading. It is being replaced by a push for functional, biophilic architecture. Innovative approaches, such as using rammed earth, mycelium insulation, or algae-integrated facades, are gaining traction because they enable buildings to regulate humidity and break down pollutants.

• (5) AI shifts from voice to background: Tech fatigue has driven a shift away from “smart” homes that require constant voice commands. Instead, 2026 introduced “invisible tech,” where AI sensors learn residents’ rhythms to automatically adjust lighting, curtain operations, and temperature.

• (6) Smaller footprints with multifunctional power: Skyrocketing construction costs and high land prices have forced the housing industry to master “space performance” (SpePa・スぺパ). Rather than building larger, more expensive homes, designers are using flexible floor plans and movable walls to create spaces that can evolve over the next 20 years.

• (7) Dedicated nooks within open-plan living: The permanence of remote work has created a demand for “mini-sanctuaries” within the larger family space. These nooks, often tucked under stairs or in corners of living rooms, allow individuals to focus on work or hobbies without feeling isolated from their families.

• (8) Prioritize “touch” over “visual” aesthetics: Because daily life is dominated by the cold, flat glass of smartphones, there is an intense craving for tactile stimulation at home. Designers are responding by specifying materials that engage the fingertips, such as fluffy bouclé fabrics for sofas, organic solid wood, natural leather, and textured ceramic tiles.

• (9) Deep greens and oranges replace neutrals: Boredom with the “social media copycat” minimalism characterized by gray and beige is driving a new wave of personality. Homeowners are using deep, nature-inspired tones, such as terracotta, olive, and deep brown, to express their individuality.

• (10) Handwashing moves to the front door: What began as a temporary post-pandemic habit has become a permanent design requirement for modern Japanese custom homes. Having handwashing stations immediately inside the entryway is now the expected standard.

Commentary

First, even if you’re not looking to design and build a custom home in Japan, you will most likely find some of these design elements in both new stand-alone houses and condominiums.

I vividly remember taking several visitors from the U.S. headquarters of my former employer to a couple of open houses for brand new homes for sale in Kyoto one weekend. My guests weren’t looking to buy these homes, but they wanted to see what a typical Japanese house looked like inside. We ended up spending more than an hour in each home because my guests found feature after feature that seemed foreign to them.

The decline of traditional spaces is occurring alongside a broader shift in Japan’s unique market for prefabricated designer homes. Unlike in many Western markets, where “prefabricated” often implies a lack of customization, Japan’s major homebuilders have perfected a system that blends the efficiency of mass production with the personalization of high-level design.

After a six- to twelve-month design process to determine the optimal floor plan within a defined budget and with ideal materials and other design details, all components are manufactured with extreme precision in a controlled factory setting. Then, everything is “reconstructed” on site. The modular construction framing and exterior — including the roof — can be erected in as little as a week, which surprises most people. However, it usually takes many more months to complete the interior finish. Tolerance standards are measured in millimeters, and construction standards are designed to withstand earthquakes and other natural disasters. Although this approach is not inexpensive, the end result is a custom-built home that can withstand the elements and requires minimal maintenance.

This approach allows even middle-market buyers to access sophisticated architectural features, such as lacquer finishes and high-insulation structures, that were once reserved for luxury custom projects.

Japan’s custom home builders have spent decades perfecting techniques that maximize energy efficiency, earthquake resilience, space utilization, and construction quality on compact urban lots. As the demand for sustainable, climate-resilient housing grows worldwide, many of these innovations—including ZEH+ energy systems, precision prefabrication, advanced insulation, and smart home integration—have significant potential well beyond Japan. These innovations offer valuable solutions for markets facing rising energy costs, aging housing stock, and increasingly stringent environmental standards.

TL;DR

• Venture far off the beaten path to discover Minshuku Shirai (民宿しらい), an incredibly authentic, off-the-grid inn in coastal Yamaguchi that avoids all major booking platforms.

• In an era of over-tourism, it’s becoming a rarity to find places in Japan that prioritize genuine hospitality and hyper-local, high-quality seafood over convenience.

• If you’re willing to forgo a private bathroom for a life-changing meal, pick up the phone, brush up on your Japanese, and book your stay directly. If you don’t speak Japanese, just ask for Keiko-san, who speaks English.

What’s new (at least to me)

Real Gaijin has found a rare gem: a traditional, family-run minshuku (inn) and seafood restaurant on the shores of Japan’s Inland Sea, also known as the Seto Naikai (瀬戸内海). Their specialty is Japanese tiger prawns, which are called kuruma ebi (車海老) in Japanese. Although this inn is frequently featured on Japanese television, it remains untouched by the digital travel industry. You must call to make a reservation.

Why it matters

Travelers crave authenticity, yet we often rely on the same apps that direct everyone to overcrowded places. This local establishment shows that the best experiences require a little extra effort.

By the numbers

• Four: The total number of guest rooms at this intimate, oceanfront property ensures a quiet, personalized stay.

• Approximately 10: The maximum number of guests per room, which is surprisingly spacious for families or small groups compared to standard business hotels.

• Zero: The number of major online travel agencies (OTAs) where you’ll find this inn, which helps keep it a true local secret.

• 16,940 yen (approximately US $105): Cost of a one-night, ocean-view stay per person including an all-you-can eat + all-you-can drink (including adult beverages) dinner of ultra-fresh seafood and a traditional Japanese breakfast the next morning. There are other plans, too, including a one-night stay + breakfast for only 6,490 yen ($40) per person (2 person minimum).

Catch up quick

Are you tired of “authentic” experiences that seem designed for Instagram? While most travelers opt for sanitized, standardized hotels, there’s a world of raw (literally in this case), traditional hospitality waiting just off the beaten path if you look past the convenience.

Context

You won’t find an ensuite toilet or private shower here, but that’s the point. By sharing communal facilities, you can immerse yourself in the local way of life, replacing luxury amenities with a genuine, down-home service that a five-star hotel simply cannot replicate.

Right out back, there is a swimming beach protected by a breakwater.

Just up the hill overlooking the beach, there is another hotel called Aioso, which features a killer view and a piping hot onsen (温泉), or hot spring, open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for only 570 yen ($3.50; hours of operation vary depending upon the day).

Go deeper

Minshuku Shirai is located directly on the Seto Naikai (瀬戸内海), or Inland Sea, in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The star of the show is kuruma ebi (車海老), or Japanese tiger prawn. The prawns are served incredibly fresh, often still moving as sashimi, before the heads and tails are deep-fried and served as a crispy second course. Fresh fish, abalone, clams, and other types of seafood are also available.

Although it is somewhat difficult to explain, the cuisine can be characterized by the Japanese word hagotai (歯ごたえ), which describes the pleasant springiness a food offers when bitten. This texture is prized in Japanese cuisine as an indicator of freshness and quality. Similar in spirit to the firmness of “al dente,” hagotai applies broadly to foods such as seafood, vegetables, mushrooms, and pickles, not just pasta.

Conventional wisdom

Many people believe that hotels not listed on Booking.com or Rakuten Travel are not worth the trouble and are impossible for foreigners to book. Not true!

However, the primary hurdle in this case is access. The location is so remote that you probably need a car (or a bicycle).

The closest bullet train station is Shin-Yamaguchi Station (新山口駅), and the inn is only a 30-minute drive from there.

The bullet train, or shinkansen (新幹線) in Japanese, takes about 30 minutes to reach Shin Yamaguchi Station from Hiroshima to the east and about one hour from Fukuoka (Hakata) to the west.

How it works

You call the minshuku inn directly to make a reservation. Although they are a traditional Japanese establishment, they have a secret weapon: Keiko-san. She spent three months on a homestay in North Carolina and is eager to speak English with foreign guests, which helps bridge the language gap for those who don’t speak Japanese.

Fun fact

Keiko-san completed her homestay experience in America about six years ago, when she was probably in her late 50s! This is very unusual. She is an exceptional student who is eager to communicate with non-Japanese guests and made us feel right at home.

Zoom out

Stripping away the convenience of OTAs also removes the impersonal nature of mass tourism. By requiring guests to call and travel deep into the countryside, these inns protect themselves from becoming tourist traps and help preserve a slice of Japanese culture that is rapidly disappearing elsewhere.

Commentary

I suspect places like this are the last bastions of “real” Japan; they aren’t catering to a global demographic, which means the quality of the food and the sincerity of the service remain uncompromised by global trends.

On the night of our stay, there was a large group of local families enjoying a banquet of fresh seafood, although we were served dinner in an adjacent private room. It appeared as though three or four generations were present at the event, and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

What to watch

Observe how these “analog” businesses adapt as AI translation tools simplify communication. Will they persist, or will they eventually give in to the convenience of digital booking?

The bottom line

If you want to experience the soul of Yamaguchi and enjoy the freshest seafood of your life, stop searching for “deals” on apps. Start calling the places that matter. We’re already planning our next visit!

4. Substack will send a verification email to your mobile device to complete the login. All you have to do is open your email application on your phone, find the email from Substack with the subject line “Finish signing in to Substack,” and you’re almost there. Tap the orange button in the email to finish signing in to the app.

5. If you’re new to the app, you’ll go through Substack’s standard onboarding process. This will take a few minutes but is easy to complete. If you don’t have the app yet, you’ll probably want to do this sooner rather than later, or at least 15 minutes before we go live.

6. Once you’ve successfully signed in, you’ll be taken to the app’s home page. When we go live, my live video will be the first “post” at the top of your app. All you have to do is click on it to join the livestream. Below is an example of what the app looked like when Chris Best, Substack’s CEO, did a live video.

Note: If you don’t see me in your app, I probably haven’t gone live yet. Just wait a few minutes, and I will show up. If, for some reason, I am not showing up in your app, use the search icon to search for Mark Kennedy. You can join the live video from there, too.
