16 hours ago comment added justhalf Yep, that would make a good answer here. The reasoning you put here is irrelevant IMO. It is an answer to "Does my spell DC change if I stop holding my focus?" but not to "Does the DC of my ongoing spell change if I stop holding my focus?"
17 hours ago comment added Tarod @justhalf While I don't think the cases are identical, this answer from that Q reaches the same conclusion as mine.
19 hours ago comment added justhalf @Tarod Still not the main question 😅. It's more like "does the DC of a multiturn spell follow your DC (so it also changes when your spell DC changes) or is it static at the time of casting (so it doesn't change even when your spell DC changes)?"
23 hours ago comment added Tarod @justhalf yeah, I was reading that Q&A. In any case, in this specific scenario, the Magic Item is overriding how the DC is calculated (while you are holding the rod)
23 hours ago comment added justhalf @Tarod still isn't touching the meat of the question, which is like what Joakim linked for the 2014 version. In the question comment. The source of DC changes can be Innate Sorcery or some other features.
yesterday comment added Tarod @justhalf they're affected while holding the rod.
yesterday comment added justhalf The question isn't about whether you still get the effects of the item, the question is more whether ongoing spells are affected by DC changes.
yesterday comment added SeriousBri I used the wrong term. Hunger of hadar has a casting time of 1 action, once it is cast can it still be affected? Concentration keeps it going, but I haven't seen any rules that say a spell can be affected once it is cast (other than dispelling).
yesterday comment added Joakim M. H. @SeriousBri I think most spells that call for a save on multiple rounds have a duration. At least Hunger of Hadar (which is mentioned in the question) and Hold Person has. I can't think of any that are instantaneous of the top of my head, but I do think there are some.
yesterday comment added Tarod @SeriousBri I don't think this is the case here.
yesterday comment added SeriousBri Aren't most spells instantaneous, so the effects (like DC) set when they are cast? And isn't this kind of complex remembrance of mechanics contrary to the intention of 5e?
yesterday comment added Nobody the Hobgoblin Simple and straightforward. The question title and answer asked (as so often) the opposite question, I edited the title to also match.
