\$\begingroup\$ Interesting. Yeah, I like mixing in the concept of typecast but it doesn't seem to quite capture the meaning. I am familiar with the different gender portrayal. More focused on personality. \$\endgroup\$LitheOhm– LitheOhm2013-04-24 02:39:08 +00:00Commented Apr 24, 2013 at 2:39

4\$\begingroup\$ @LitheOhm By the way, I cited TV Tropes because they usually tell you the mainstream name for their tropes where they exist (e.g., a stable time loop is elsewhere known as the bootstrap paradox). They note that the trope is very common but don't offer a mainstream name, which I take as evidence of absence. \$\endgroup\$B. Szonye– B. \$\begingroup\$ It would seem our closest candidate then comes from acting. At least it's closer than the literary round character. \$\endgroup\$LitheOhm– LitheOhm2013-04-24 09:16:08 +00:00Commented Apr 24, 2013 at 9:16

3\$\begingroup\$ +1 we use "playing against type" to describe this, it may not be logically correct but... People often play to their personality as their most common type anyway. \$\endgroup\$mxyzplk– mxyzplk2013-05-30 21:30:39 +00:00Commented May 30, 2013 at 21:30

\$\begingroup\$ +1, "Playing against type" is the answer that sprang to mind as soon as I read the question title. \$\endgroup\$DCShannon– DCShannon2015-04-17 03:24:52 +00:00Commented Apr 17, 2015 at 3:24

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- Make sure you include the system tag for the game system you are asking about (if appropriate and if the tag exists).
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. dnd-5e-2014), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
