⚡️ LCOE vs. System-LCOE: Why understanding the full picture matters! As part of Norway’s efforts to promote smart, sustainable energy solutions abroad, we often highlight how competitive solar, wind, and offshore technologies have become. The progress is real, costs have dropped, and renewables are at the heart of the global energy transition. But when planning large-scale investments or national energy strategies, headline figures alone aren’t enough. For real impact, we must understand the difference between LCOE and System-LCOE and why this distinction matters for delivering reliable, low-emission power 24/7. 📉 LCOE. A valuable, but limited metric LCOE (Levelized Cost of Electricity) is a well-established measure of production cost per MWh over a plant’s lifetime. It’s an essential benchmark and the reason why solar, wind, and offshore wind are now increasingly preferred in many markets. However, LCOE only tells us what it costs to produce electricity, not what it takes to deliver it when and where it’s needed. That’s where System-LCOE becomes critical. 🧩 What System-LCOE adds to the conversation System-LCOE reflects the broader cost of integrating energy into a functioning power system. This includes: - Backup capacity (e.g., hydropower, gas peakers) - Storage (batteries, hydrogen, thermal, etc.) - Grid upgrades and interconnection - Curtailment losses and balancing services This doesn’t make renewables "too expensive", but reminds us that energy systems need more than generation alone. The Norwegian perspective: our flexibility is a strength Norway is in a unique position. A flexible hydropower system provides natural balancing for intermittent energy sources, such as wind. That makes it easier and cheaper to integrate renewables at scale, a goal many other countries are actively pursuing, for instance, through battery deployment or hydrogen-based storage. This means Norwegian companies, technologies, and experience in system integration and flexibility are more relevant than ever. ⚠️ Why this nuance matters Comparing LCOE from solar in Spain with baseload gas in Southeast Asia doesn’t tell the whole story. System integration matters, and System-LCOE can often be 1.5–3 times higher than LCOE, depending on geography, grid structure, and generation mix. Norwegian companies must be prepared to address this complexity when advising or exporting and show how smart design and flexible technology can manage these costs. ✅ Bottom line To support our partners in making sound energy decisions, we must: - Go beyond LCOE when discussing costs - Highlight Norway’s strength in system-level thinking - Recognise that renewables are essential, and so is integration 📣 Next time you see that solar or wind is “the cheapest,” ask: Is that just the generation cost or the full cost of reliable energy delivery, including the cost of infrastructure? Is that the full answer, or is it still blowin’ in the wind 👍

It's not over until it's over. I already wrote that a few months ago. Now there's more movement on the subject of Northvolt and I hope that it comes to a positive end after all. There are probably three potential buyers and that could mean the continuation of Northvolt. A new chapter — energy talent driving Sweden forward In the aftermath of Northvolt’s bankruptcy, we’re now seeing something positive take shape: former engineers and experts are building new ventures, proving that Sweden’s battery know-how is far from lost — it’s being transformed. One great example is the new battery initiative by LBS Group in Skellefteå. Led by former Northvolt engineers Sean Stephenson, Neil Carlisle, and Albin Wikström, the company is developing smart battery storage systems with advanced cell monitoring — drawing on lessons from Sweden’s most ambitious battery journey. This is a strong reminder that Sweden’s SME and startup ecosystem remains vibrant, resilient, and quick to turn disruption into opportunity. Peter Carlsson, former CEO of Northvolt, has raised at least €5m for a new company, Aris Machina, founded with Northvolt’s former VP of Software Engineering & AI Siddharth Khullar. The company jumps on the AI hype aiming to improve manufacturing processes. Oi. A lot of people feel that one of the big reasons Northvolt struggled was because they just couldn’t get manufacturing right. They never managed to make it through that tough phase known as ‘manufacturing hell,’ and it ended up costing them dearly.

A new report has been published at Energiforsk concerning Trends of Frequency Deviations in the Nordic Power System. In the report, the last two decades quality of the grid frequency has been studied together with analysis of inertia values. Interviews have been held with the Nordic Nuclear Production Plant owners and the Swedish and Finnish TSOs. Conclusions are made whether it exist correlations with system quantities like frequency quality, inertia, wind power production, wear and tear of nuclear plants, and system services. Conclusions from the report are: * Nordic Nuclear Production Plant owners do not believe that there is a wear and tear of their plants related to the quality of the grid frequency. * The quality of the grid frequency has been improved during the last four years which is a result of larger volumes of system services such as Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve, a-FRR. * During months of high wind power production the grid frequency shows better quality compared to months with less wind power production. * The system service Fast Frequency Reserve, FFR is an effective tool to counteract the lack of inertia. * It can be beneficial to develop frequency products like FFR also for over-frequencies in periods of low inertia. *Statistically it is shown in the report that the frequency is more often outside the interval +/-0.1 Hz around the hour shift, i.e., around the full hour. This is a conse­quence of how energy is traded. * During twenty-one years, the frequency has been higher than 50.1 Hz at 7:00 in the morning (Finnish Time) at 300 days. Ingrid Capacity, is developing Finland’s largest and one of the Nordics’ largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Nivala, Finland, with a capacity of 70MW/140MWh. The project underscores Ingrid Capacity’s strategy of rapidly scaling to meet the growing need for flexibility and optimization in Europe’s electricity grid.

Public consultation is now open for Ørsted BECCS project 🌱   We have reached an important milestone for the Kalundborg CO2 Hub project, which is now listed with VERRA and open for public consultation.   The collaboration in the partnership under the NL+ certification project has been absolutely key to reaching this milestone —a collaboration between Northern Lights JV , Ørsted, Microsoft, and SLB Capturi.   The Ørsted Kalundborg CO2 Hub will capture and store biogenic CO₂ generated from bioenergy production at Asnæs and Avedøre Power Stations in Denmark. This 100% biogenic CO₂ will be permanently stored in the offshore Aurora storage complex on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, operated by Northern Lights.   The project will be the first full-scale CCS value chain in Denmark. Aker Nscale has reached an agreement with Løvenskiold-Fossum Kraft Drift to develop a 96MW data center in Skien, Norway. The proposed facility is intended to support AI-focused workloads, and the company has submitted an application to Statnett for the required grid capacity. Leopold Løvenskiold, general manager and owner of Løvenskiold-Fossum, said: "We believe the data center will attract new, attractive labor and be an important contributor to immigration and value creation in the region. This is a new milestone in the industrial development of Løvenskiold-Fossum." Løvenskiold-Fossum oversees approximately 330,000 acres of forestland and operates multiple small-scale power plants through its Kraft business unit. Specific details regarding the data center, including its precise location, have not yet been disclosed. Aker Nscale is a joint venture between neocloud provider Nscale and investment group Aker, formally established in October 2025. The company is also advancing plans for a 250MW data center in Narvik and a 230MW facility in Kvandal. Grid expansion is a marathon, not a sprint. That’s why long-term frameworks between national grid operators and technical partners matter: they build shared knowledge, speed up decision-making, and ensure continuity across a decade of projects. Sweden’s electricity grid is under a transformation pressure driven by electrification, new industries, and the shift to fossil-free energy. The challenge isn’t just building new lines and stations, but coordinating hundreds of interconnected projects that together form the foundation of our future energy system. That’s why we are happy to share that AFRY has signed two new framework agreements with Svenska kraftnät – one for technical consultancy services and one for design planning and project deliveries. Through these agreements, AFRY will support with expertise in project management, sustainability, system analysis, and design for overhead lines, cables, and substations. It’s a long-term commitment - with contract periods of six and eight years respectively – to strengthening Sweden’s electricity infrastructure and accelerating the transition to a sustainable energy system. Sønderborg in Denmark has set itself the world’s tightest deadline by which to become carbon-neutral — 2029. Danfoss’ focus on energy efficiency was a good starting point, and one that other places could imitate. “If you want to start in the smart way, start with energy efficiency, because it saves people money,” Lars Tveen, Chairman of ProjectZero, told Ben Cooke from The Times when he visited Sønderborg. The focus has paid off. It has already cut emissions by 66% In 2022 the director of International Energy Agency (IEA), Dr. Fatih Birol, christened Sønderborg the “world capital of energy efficiency”. A new milestone in Portugal’s clean energy journey is taking shape, led by EDP in collaboration with Boliden Somincor. Because the next big opportunity to decarbonize our economies is by bringing the hard-to abate sectors in the electrification journey, we are developing Portugal’s largest decentralized solar project, to supply the Neves-Corvo mine, in the South of the country. Europe’s largest zinc mine will boost energy independence by over 35% and cut more than 41,000 tons of CO₂ annually, advancing its shift to sustainable energy. The solar panels will generate enough renewable power for nearly 30,000 households each year and the project is creating 200 construction jobs. Good input to the project from Henning Dahl and Kristin Sand Bakken, also a great start for our new project lead on Battery Passport Ingrid Flatebø Holsen This initiative is about much more than compliance to the EU Battery Regulations — it’s about enabling real sustainability. The Battery Passport will help track how batteries are made, used, reused, and recycled. It provides trusted data on everything from performance and lifespan to environmental impact and origin, making it easier to make greener choices across the battery value chain. At Corvus, we’re contributing to several work packages, focusing on technical performance indicators, ESG data, and how this information will flow between systems in a reliable and secure way. We’re delighted to announce that OX2 has acquired project Fageråsen in Dalarna region from Eolus and DalaVind. With up to 34 turbines and an estimated annual production of 700 GWh, the wind farm will supply about 14% of Dalarna’s electricity needs. The wind farm is in electricity price area 3 (SE3) and has received necessary permits for realization. The Fageråsen wind farm will be part of OX2’s growing portfolio of energy parks, where the company not only acts as a developer and manager but also remains a long-term owner as an independent power producer. “This acquisition aligns with our strategy to accelerate access to renewable energy while strengthening our role as an owner of energy infrastructure. Eolus and DalaVind have done a great job developing the project and guiding it through the permitting process. We now look forward to moving ahead and putting the shovel in the ground,” says Emelie Zakrisson, Country Manager Sweden at OX2. The goal is to have the park fully operational by early 2028.
