Online, even if the name on the card was forwarded to the merchant, the merchant could do nothing to prove the identity of the card holder. Indeed, the one buying the service (the card holder) needs not to be the same person as the end user: it can be an acquaintance. The website has nothing to compare the card holder name to.A. Interesting feedback. Indeed, it's not completely uncommon to buy something on behalf of somebody else, especially if that "somebody" is partner, very close friend or family member. "as this [cardholder name] does not even get sent over the wire" is a good pointusr-local-ΕΨΗΕΛΩΝ– usr-local-ΕΨΗΕΛΩΝ2019-11-05 13:10:45 +00:00Commented Nov 5, 2019 at 13:10

I agree. Having performed credit card integrations through a number of different processors, there is rarely an option to verify the name of the card holder even if you wanted to. It might be worth adding why they ask for the name when it doesn't even matter and they clearly don't check it.Conor Mancone– Conor Mancone2019-11-05 13:17:33 +00:00Commented Nov 5, 2019 at 13:17

1Thanks for the feedback, Conor. I think it's more to do with 'security theater' than anything else.mti2935– mti29352019-11-05 14:14:36 +00:00Commented Nov 5, 2019 at 14:14

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. web-application), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
