1$\begingroup$ geoffc : If you want to count CSM as a stage, please add LM. $\endgroup$Deer Hunter– Deer Hunter2013-08-07 19:29:32 +00:00Commented Aug 7, 2013 at 19:29

1$\begingroup$ @DeerHunter So LM is a great example that breaks the rule. It does not contribute to the initial launch. So by that thinking, the SM does not either. The S-IV stage did the TLI. And SM does TEI on the way back. $\endgroup$geoffc– geoffc2013-08-07 19:34:11 +00:00Commented Aug 7, 2013 at 19:34

$\begingroup$ The Soviet N1 Rocket (intended for a moonshot) was a 5 stage design too. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N1_%28rocket%29 $\endgroup$Dan Is Fiddling By Firelight– Dan Is Fiddling By Firelight2013-08-07 20:08:06 +00:00Commented Aug 7, 2013 at 20:08

$\begingroup$ I think you need to define more clearly what counts as a stage, but the list of possible candidates shouldn't neglect to include Titan IV with up to 5 stages, and Proton with 3-4, but up to 6 RD-253 boosters attached to stage 1. ;) $\endgroup$TildalWave– TildalWave2013-08-07 20:39:02 +00:00Commented Aug 7, 2013 at 20:39

$\begingroup$ @TildalWave I agree, stage definition is hard, I am thinking leave up to the answer to define it. Atlas that dropped tanks along the way 1 stage? 1.5? $\endgroup$geoffc– geoffc2013-08-07 21:20:49 +00:00Commented Aug 7, 2013 at 21:20

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. orbital-mechanics), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
