  • $\begingroup$ Do you have any refs on that, like interviews with Bryukhanov and other RKK Energiya engineers? $\endgroup$ Commented Mar 25, 2015 at 2:47
  • $\begingroup$ No, which is why I stated that I'm speculating and that I have no knowledge of Roscosmos' or Energiya's plans. $\endgroup$ Commented Mar 25, 2015 at 14:57
  • $\begingroup$ What i am asking is why the station was designed that way. It had to have been a conscious choice. I am happy to have received background, in both answers, but they aren't addressing the question and i felt this was getting off track. $\endgroup$ Commented Mar 25, 2015 at 15:00
  • $\begingroup$ It's possible that nobody thought of the idea of having a simple central core module to which other modules could attach/detach. Remember that ISS is derived from Space Station Freedom, which was designed in the 1980's. They used the best technology and design methods they knew of, but today we have new technologies and new methods. $\endgroup$ Commented Mar 25, 2015 at 15:04
