    One possible downside of a metaclass for this that immediately occurs to me is that you can't call the classmethod directly on an instance. c = C(); c.foo() raises AttributeError, you'd have to do type(c).foo(). This might also be considered a feature - I can't think of why you'd want to though. Commented Jun 14, 2016 at 21:57
