This doesn’t work for me in Excel 2007. Commented Dec 3, 2013 at 22:47

It works because it puts the cell into edit mode rather than text entry mode. It's equivalent to double–clicking in the cell. Commented Aug 17, 2015 at 4:40

If you are attempting to paste multiple rows, this will not work as it will put the text of all the rows into one cell. Commented Aug 1, 2016 at 12:21
  • In Excel 2013 you CAN set the default paste options, according to Microsoft. Options > Advanced > Cut, copy, paste. Adjust your defaults there. Commented Aug 6, 2018 at 22:12

Using the latest version of Excel, whatever that is in our 365 world, the options are pretty much useless for this use case. Show paste options button when content is pasted, Show Insert Options buttons, Cut, copy, and sort inserted objects with their parent cells. Nothing for stripping source formatting automatically now and forever. Commented Dec 27, 2023 at 0:10
