Overview

Stack Internal's content ingestion feature leverages the power of AI to quickly turn your internal documents into high-quality content on your Stack Internal site. This allows you to take static knowledge scattered across your organization and make it dynamic, accessible content your users can easily locate and integrate into their workflows.

All Stack Internal Enterprise sites start with a complimentary 100 knowledge objects (ingested and published Q&A pairs). You can purchase additional Ingestion capacity if needed. See the "Knowledge objects limit" section of this document for more information.

Permissions

Admins and moderators have access to Ingestion features by default. Regular users can also access Ingestion features if their reputation exceeds the admin-set threshold.

Admin settings

To control Ingestion settings, click Admin settings in the left-hand menu then Settings under the "INGESTION" heading.

Use the Enable Ingestion selector to enable or disable Ingestion by turning it On or Off. Enabling Ingestion also enables file upload and API endpoint access.

Confluence Cloud connector

The Confluence Cloud connector allows your Stack Internal site to pull pages from one or more Confluence Cloud spaces. To configure the connector, you'll need access to both Stack Internal and Confluence Cloud as an administrator. The Confluence connector works only with Confluence Cloud (not Confluence on-premises).

After initial ingestion, the Confluence Cloud connector does a daily scan of each space to locate new pages. It then ingests that content, running it through duplication checks to avoid redundant information.

The Confluence Cloud connector ingests content from pages only (not from attachments). Ingestion treats each Confluence page as a discrete document.

Confluence Cloud connector settings in Confluence Cloud

To set up the Confluence Cloud connector, start by logging in to your Confluence Cloud administrator account. Once there, you'll use the following process to create an API token that Stack Internal can use to access your Confluence Cloud space(s).

  1. Go to https://id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/security/api-tokens.
  2. Click the first Create API token button (not the button for a token with scopes).
  3. Give the token a Name (for example: Stack Ingestion).
  4. Set the Expires on field to a date one year from now.
  1. In the "Copy your API token" box that appears, click Copy to place the API token on your computer's clipboard. Save it to a password file or working document. You'll paste the value into the Stack Internal Ingestion settings page in a later step.

Don't click Done until you've copied and saved the API token. After you finish this step, there's no way to retrieve the token.

Confluence Cloud connector settings in Stack Internal

The "Connectors" area allows you to configure the Confluence Cloud connector. Click Manage connector to open the settings page.

The Confluence Cloud settings page appears.

The Confluence Cloud settings page has the following settings.

  • Enable Confluence Cloud connector Set this On or Off to enable or disable the connector.
  • Confluence service account email Set this to the email address you use to log into Confluence Cloud.
  • API token Enter the API token you created in Confluence Cloud.
  • Host URL The URL of your Confluence Cloud site.
  • Confluence space keys The key for the space you want Ingestion to access to pull Confluence Cloud content. You can enter multiple space keys, separated by commas.

When you click Save credentials, ingestion will test the credentials and alert you to any problems. It then queues pages from the Confluence space(s) you designated for ingestion.

The Confluence Cloud API token lasts for one year. You'll need to repeat this process in a year to keep the connector working.

Knowledge object usage

Beneath the connector management buttons sits the "Usage" section of the Ingestion admin control panel. Here you can track your site's knowledge object usage for the monthly period.

You'll see the number of knowledge objects used for the month, the number of knowledge objects available, and the date the next period starts. For more information, see the "Knowledge objects limit" section below.

Ingestion content review reputation threshold

As with the Stack Internal content health feature, you can set a required reputation threshold for regular users to access the Ingestion review queue. To set the Ingestion content review threshold, click Admin settings in the left-hand menu then Reputation under the "CUSTOMIZE" heading. Near the bottom of the page, you'll see the Ingestion reputation threshold setting.

All site admins and moderators have access to Ingestion. The reputation threshold applies only to regulars users.

Enter the desired reputation threshold in the Ingestion field. Only users meeting or exceeding this threshold will be able to review, edit, and publish Q&A pairs created with the Ingestion process.

Click Save settings.

Advanced statistics

Stack Internal combines content reviewer statistics for Ingestion with those of content health. To access advanced statistics for Ingestion, click Stats at the top of the Ingestion review tasks page.

Advanced stats

To view detailed Ingestion review statistics, click Advanced stats. The "Ingestion breakdown" page appears, showing detailed user statistics for Q&A pairs edited, deleted, published, and more. You can set the minimum number of reviews to filter the user list with the Min. # reviews field. You can also select the time range for the statistics, from Today to 30d (30 days).

Though the Queue pull-down defaults to Ingestion on this page, you can change it to view many other aspects of content health and user activity.

Review suspensions

Some users may abuse their content editing rights. In these cases, admins can suspend users' access to the content review queue. To view warnings and suspension, click Review suspensions. The "Current review warnings and suspensions" page appears. Here you can review suspensions and warnings from the last 30 days.

This page shows suspensions and warnings for all content health review actions, including Ingestion.

Knowledge objects limit

All Stack Internal customers get 100 knowledge objects (published Q&A pairs) per month at no extra cost. For higher volume needs, organizations can purchase premium tiered add-ons. Contact your Stack Overflow account representative for details.

When you exceed your knowledge objects limit, you'll see a message that tells you when the next monthly period begins. For example: "Ingestion is currently frozen in read-only mode. The limit will reset on _________".

While frozen, Ingestion will not accept new files by upload or API. Any connectors (for example: Confluence Cloud) will stop retrieving content. When the next monthly interval begins (or if you upgrade your Ingestion contract), Ingestion will resume working.
