Vietnam just got a €150M vote of confidence from SAP. SAP officially launched its newest R&D hub — SAP Labs Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City. This isn’t just another outsourcing center. It’s one of the largest technology R&D investments Vietnam has ever seen. It also represents one of SAP's largest single R&D investments globally. A few things stand out: → €150M committed over 5 years – serious skin in the game. → 200 hires in the first year (fastest-growing SAP Labs globally) with plans to reach 500 by 2027. Diversifying focus from India. → Focus on AI + sustainable supply chains – Vietnam is now shaping the future of enterprise software, not just coding it. → Government support at the highest level – Deputy PM Nguyễn Chí Dũng challenged SAP to aim for 5,000 staff, not 500. → Macro tailwinds – Vietnam’s digital economy is growing 20% YoY, 3x the national GDP growth rate. For me, this signals a turning point. Vietnam is no longer just a cost-competitive outsourcing market. It’s becoming a global innovation hub. SAP execs put it best: Vietnam has a “proven track record in delivering tech innovation” and a “fast-growing base of software engineers.” I’ve been saying this for months: in the AI-native era, building your data/AI talent muscle is the new moat. Together, by blending Vietnam’s vibrant entrepreneurial spirit with a clear, streamlined regulatory environment, AI can become a major pillar driving Vietnam’s next phase of growth. Crucially, any regulations should align with international standards and frameworks to ensure interoperability, regulatory consistency, and minimize barriers for cross-border innovation. Additionally, public sector adoption of AI and new technologies plays a vital role in building trust and confidence among the broader population and businesses. I caught up with Doug Yeum at the AWS Cloud Day. He shared valuable insights into Korea’s business environment - with many industries producing major brands through automotive, semiconductor, e-commerce, consumer electonics, telecommunications, banks, retail, etc. South Korea’s economy, with a GDP of approximately $1.9 trillion in 2024 and a population of 51.8 million, is an impressive powerhouse. As I reflect what I shared with the Vietnam’s media during AWS Cloud Day Vietnam, on the importance of government role in the next wave of growth for Vietnam and try to tie to my conversation with Doug, I see a strong correlation and importance and extent of government-supportive policies strategically designed to advance AI and digital transformation. This ecosystem is a major factor behind South Korea’s significantly higher productivity compared to many Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam. For Vietnam, with all our ambitions and resources, the next wave of transformation must go beyond working harder or just a function of headcount adding. With Vietnam’s ambitions and the recent announced 250 new initiaitives, is there an AI Agentic org chart (people plus agents? Say if you have 100 human beings / employees, can the org chart be like actually 10x (100 human and 900 agents)? For me, there is no other way - Leveraging cloud computing, AI and advanced technologies is essential to propel this transformation. To make this vision a reality, the government must play a pivotal role in establishing a clear, efficient regulatory environment and investing in robust skills development across the country. This applies to businesses as well — leveraged technologies, build a skilled workforce coupled with a strong culture is the major differentiator. A use case that won first place in Fujitsu’s internal hackathon—commonly known as “Plannathon”—has now been formalized into a project and publicly recognized for successfully solving real business challenges. In just three months, the team implemented a data center P&L management model (project profitability × overhead absorption variance) and achieved real-time visibility of gross profit.
