TAKE THREE: SYMPTOMS VS. SOLUTIONS
A client recently asked for "more compression on the lead vocal" of a mix I was working on.
As a service provider, I was of course happy to oblige. But just to make sure I understood his vision, I asked him to elaborate.
It turned out that the actual problem he had with the mix was not "insufficient compression," it was that some of the quiet lyrics were hard to hear. "More compression" was his proposed solution to that symptom.
And it's a good thing I asked because that would have been not a great solution to that problem in this particular case.
The best clients are the ones who can communicate clearly about their symptoms so you can collaborate on the solution.
The best audio engineers (studio and live alike) are the ones who are able to solve the problems whether their client communicates the symptom well or not.
