City's population rises to 23,98,165

From 20,11,662 in the year 2001, Nagpur city's population has increased to 23,98,165, thus registering a growth of 19.21%. As per figures available from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the total number of men residing in Nagpur is 12,22,467 while the total number of women is 11,75,627.

NAGPUR: From 20,11,662 in the year 2001, Nagpur city's population has increased to 23,98,165, thus registering a growth of 19.21%. As per figures available from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the total number of men residing in Nagpur is 12,22,467 while the total number of women is 11,75,627. There has been an increase of 15.36% in population of men and 18.47% in population of women in the city as compared to 2001.

The population of others (transgenders), categorized separately for the first time in the 2011 census, is 71.
TOI had reported a few weeks ago that the city's population would come up below 25 lakh in the census.
The number of children in the age group of 0-6 years in city has fallen from 2,41,253 in 2001 to 2,37,020 in 2011. Of this, number of males has fallen from 1,24,410 to 1,23,371. The numbers of girl children has fallen from 1,16,843 to 1,13,649 in 2011.
Literacy rates in the city have marked a tremendous jump. The number of literates in the city has risen from 16,14,115 in 2001 is 20,12,389. The number of literate men in city has risen from 8,74,673 to 10,56,787 and number of literate women has risen from 7,39,442 to 9,55,560. The number of literates amongst others is 42.
The total population of Nagpur district has increased from 40,67,637 in 2001 to 46,53,171 in 2011, thus registering a growth of 14.39%. The number of men in the district has increased from 21,05,314 in 2001 to 23,88,474 in 2011, thus registering a growth of 13.45%. The number of women in the district has increased from 19,62,329 in 2001 to 22,64,608 in 2011, thus registering a growth of 15.4%. The population of 'others' is 89.

The total number of children in the 0-6 years age bracket has fallen by 44,036 (-8.37%) to 4,81,814 in 2011. Of this, 2,50,223 are male and 2,31,591 are female. The district boasts of 25.48% increase in number of literates. The number of literates in Nagpur district has risen to 37,34,532 in 2011 of which 20,04,856 are male and 17,29,629 are female. The number of literates amongst others in the district is 47.
Literacy rate in the district has improved to 93.76% for men and 85.07% for women. Nagpur district stands second in the state with literacy rate of 89.52%.
NMC officials said the percentage decadal variation in population of Nagpur district has fallen from 23.74 in 1991-2001 to 14.39 in 2001-11. Another positive outcome of the census is that the sex ratio (number of women per 1000 men) has improved from 932 in 2001 to 948 in 2011. Nagpur district has registered highest sex ratio of 991 women per thousand men in 1901 and lowest of 922 in 1991 and risen to the position of 12th in sex ratio on state-level.
The density of population per sq km has increased from 411 in 2001 to 470 in 2011.
