Change of Plan!

The proposed new blog at “Overspill” on the “Blogger” platform has been discarded, as it was not possible to set up as I wished it to be. It no longer exists.

The posts I made there have been included on a new blog at “familyaffair” on Tumblr:-

https://www.tumblr.com/blog/familyaffair

Please note that any comments made on this WordPress blog are of no value to you whatsoever, as they will be relentlessly deleted, and the blog is discontinued! I have no need of pills for any reason, be they from Canada or wherever, and at my age have no interest in sexuality.

Farewell to WordPress!

It’s time! In fact, it’s well past time! WordPress is driven by well-meaning people, no doubt, but they seem to have little idea of what their potential clients need and want.

I have no doubt that a youngster starting out with his/her first blog would only be too pleased to put up with the constant changes, the multitude of choices, and the lack of consideration of client’s wishes.

As far as I am concerned, Gutenberg was the killer! WordPress seems to be determined to promote this load of rubbish, irrespective of the wishes of it’s clients. I don’t like it, I don’t see any value in it, but I do see the negative side where webpages will need more bandwidth to transfer effectively the same data, (at increased cost, of course), which also means they are slower than before.

I don’t need all this hassle at my age, (77), and am voting with my feet.

This will probably be the last post on this blog, although it will continue to be automatically supplied with my Twitter output.

If you wish to stay informed of what I am doing now, you could visit my new blog at “Overspill”, which is found at https://hyper67.blogspot.com/.

I have opted for simplicity, and minimum hassle. Where before I found it desirable to run my own copy of WordPress on my computer, I can throw all that junk away now, and release the space on my hard drive. I work out what I want to say in Notepad, and then post it up to the blog in normal text – simple!

Whatever I choose to do, you will of course make your own choices, and that is exactly as it should be. Happy Blogging!

A 4-Year Period of Opportunity!

American elections always seem to be gruelling, and this last one was no exception. It was days before we finally got the sign we were waiting for – Joe Biden had passed the barrier!

Result

At last we were to be rid of that one-term monster – Trump!

The new president is to be Joe Biden, who at 78 years of age must be one of the oldest ever elected, and his running mate Kamala Harris. If you do a quick check in Wikipedia, as I did, you may well be pleasantly surprised to find that this is an experienced, and virtuous pair who are not intent on destroying relationships with all friends, foes and allies, – as Trump seemed to be, but who want to build up relationships wherever possible, instead of tearing them down. And if Joe should succumb to the ailments associated with old age during this period, I am absolutely certain that Kamala Harris will step up to the plate and take over the job with a minimum of fuss.

They have 4 years to get stuck in, do their stuff, and prove their worth, before the next election.

Why should that be important?

Well, Trump is feeling a little pissed off I should imagine, especially about missing out in his second term, but is not planning to go anywhere in a hurry. Nor are the the people that voted for him. And that would be 48.5% of 145,997,990, which amounts to nearly 71 million people. And they will all be waiting there at the time of the next election!

Our best bet against this menace is to use the time to persuade them that Trump is not worth following – not even to the golf course!

Purely Academic!

Time marches on! At my age I have no use for my Curriculum Vitae now, but thought it would make an ideal expansion for my “About” page. But before I get started on that, I would just like to welcome a bunch of new readers who have joined us as the result of my last post.

I remember my very first job interview very clearly. It was for a chemical company in Luton, Bedfordshire, and the time was set for 14.00 hrs. I was there on time, but the interviewer was not. A secretary apologised, but he didn’t show up until 1 hour later than agreed. I was livid! Before he had chance to say anything, I stated:- “If that’s the way the employees are treated in this firm, I have no intention of working for it”, and walked out in disgust. I then followed up on my second choice, which was the Royal Air Force.

To whom it may concern;- If you are reading this document, it will probably mean that I am applying for a position with your company – or your client, or that I am offering a service.
I have been fortunate in that I have had a wide range of interesting job opportunities, often coupled with extreme pressure to meet specific deadlines. The limits of presentation and the interests of clarity dictate that not all detail can be usefully included in one document. Should you have questions that cannot be answered from the material presented, please do not hesitate to contact me.

MAKING SENSE OF THE PANDEMIC!

Since the beginning of 2020 we have been bombarded with information about the Covid19 virus, and its effect on countries around the world. Unfortunately, there has been no reference point around which to frame the information, and I have been lacking an overall picture. I suddenly hit on the idea of using a country’s population as the reference, and got busy producing a web page. Unfortunately, I haven’t found an easy way of presenting this information in the blog, other than to use a series of pictures. I hope they will suffice, and that you will see the same results as I do. Data is from September 18, 2020.

Before we start, a few pointers.
– Rows with a red background have an infection rate of over 2% of population. This is considered very negative.
– Rows with a yellow background have an infection rate of between 1% and 2% of population, or they may have a death rate equal to or exceeding 0.06% of population, or both.
– Quatar seems to have recovered very well from a difficult situation – 4.32% infection rate, but only 0.007% death rate!
– Similarly, Bahrain, with a 3.81% infection rate, and a 0.013% death rate.
– 3 countries are outstanding because of mismanagement:- Brazil, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
– Even though China’s population is about 21 times that of the UK, the UK has more than 4 times the number of infected, and nearly 9 times the number of deaths.

Healthy or not, it’s time for more heads to roll!

NOT ALL YOUTUBE DOWNLOADERS ARE EQUAL!

Times change, and where I was happily using YTD on an earlier computer, it now comes with virus attached, and is immediately quarantined by my antivirus software.

Looking for an alternative, I tried “winx-youtube-downloader”. This curious program looks at the file address that you load in, and proceeds to “analyze” it. Then it decides it has to update the analyzer software, and goes off to download that. After analysis, it presents some choices as to file size and picture quality, and then proceeds to download the file.

Or so I thought.

When it said it had finished, I looked in the location where the file was to have been stored, and found it empty!

Exit “winx-youtube-downloader”. I removed it from the computer. I needed something better than that!

Hint. When you search for a suitable program, make sure that you include the following:- “Windows 10”, and “No Virus”.

My next attempt was with “mp4-downloader-3-setup“, from download.cnet.com. The program works only with YouTube, but offers not only the downloader, but also a converter, and a player. I may try out the converter later, but I have a surfeit of players already, and do not intend to change from my favourite – “GOM Player”.

(Note. This program is on trial only.)

Operation is simple enough:- load the URL into the clipboard, click on “Add URL’, select the quality and format you require, and change the destination folder if you desire.

Hit “Start”, then sit back and wait.

Download speed will depend on your system, so I make no comment other than to say the estimated time to complete the download will be displayed.

At last I was able to learn why Henry Cavill wanted to play the part of “The Witcher”, and both Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) and Freya Allan (Ciri) were part of the interview. Perhaps more to the point was the section with Lauren Schmidt (Executive Producer), who said you need no previous information, you can just sit back and enjoy the show.

Just a reminder of the URL:-

Go for it, and you’ll know as much as I do!

TAKE YOUR ROTTEN TOMATOES WITH A PINCH OF SALT!

I usually check out Rotten Tomatoes when I want to know something about a film or a series episode that I am considering downloading, but the site has not been too much help to me recently.

For each item there is a Critics Score, and an Audience Score if the item has been available long enough for people to respond with their views. I usually put more weight on the audience response, as I have little confidence in the critics. Even so, I come unstuck time and again, probably because my standards are very different from other people’s.

Bodyguard, 93/83, for example; a short series about a politician’s bodyguard. Highly touted, but very boring. Not to be confused with The Bodyguard, and Kevin Costner!

The Sinner, 90/71, not a series about one person, but the subject changed every season. The one person tying the whole thing together was the investigating detective.

The Stranger, 86/64, two ladies that seemed to take a pernicious delight in wrecking other people’s lives!

Airplane, 97/89, supposedly hilarious, but I found the humour rather sparse.

Dark, 95/95, the plot, such as it was, was spread over 26 episodes. At times it seemed that the actors had forgotten their lines, and the prompter was nowhere to be found. If it had been compressed into 4 epsodes total, it might have made some sense. As it was – utterly boring!

Zardoz, 45/54, or otherwise “Sean Conerry’s Mistake! The title is apparently a play on the “Wi’ZARD’ of ‘OZ’, and is apparently set in the year 2293. The film is junk from start to finish, and once you’ve seen this:-

you’ve seen it all. Don’t bother downloading it!

Dead to Me, 90/90, is very entertaining, and full of surprises. Two series, each of 10 episodes, very worthwhile!

The Witcher, 67/92. The first series of 8 episodes, is based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski. These episodes are not in any chronological order, and the same characters may appear in a later episode after having been convincingly killed in an earlier one. Nevertheless, this is really gripping entertainment, and highly recommended!

There must be more to come, as there are 8 books in the series:-
The Last Wish
The Sword of Destiny
Blood of Elves
The Time of Contempt
Baptism of Fire
The Tower of Swallows
Lady of the Lake
Season of Storms

Henry Cavill really wanted to play the Witcher, and Anya Chalotra makes a fantastic contribution as Yennefer. Do watch the Youtube presentation!

Cuties 88/3

Here there is a tremendous disparity between the Critics score, and that of the audience, who mostly regard it as out and out child pornography. For once I find myself in agreement with the critics. The transition through puberty is a difficult time for many girls, and when coupled with the fact that the father has taken a new wife, it is no surprise at all that Amy doesn’t know which direction to go.

CARE OF HARD DRIVES.

After a computer has been in use for a while, the hard drive(s) will start to become “cluttered”. This does not mean that you will start getting errors, but that new files are not stored as efficiently as they could have been, the read/write function gets slower, and the drive will wear out faster.

When a file is stored, the system looks for the next available space to start writing the data. If the file is too big for that space, the overflow will be stored in a new location. If the new location is not big enough, then another location will be found. This sequence repeats until the file has been written completely.

If new spaces can be found without moving the read/write heads to a different position, it will be faster to complete the write function. This is possible by electronically switching to different write surfaces in a multi-disc drive.

If still more space is required, the heads will have to be moved. In a cluttered drive, it may be necessary to move the heads several times before a complete file has been written or read.

The operating system will normally take care of this problem, as defragmentation of the hard drive(s) is normally set to run in the background at a specific interval, say once a week. However, this will only apply to hard drives that are mounted in the computer. Hard drives that are connected via USB are ignored.

You will need a non-Windows program to deal with USB drives, and I recommend “Defraggler” from Piriform.

Operation is simple enough. You first “Analyze” the drive of interest to establish if defragemention is needed or not. If you decide it is, you have a choice of “Defrag” or “Quick Defrag”.

Note that in order to defragment a drive you must have enough spare capacity on it, or the time taken to do the job will increase alarmingly. 20% is recommended. If necessary, move data off the drive to temporary storage somewhere else before you start the defragmentation.

Although when installing “Defraggler” you are asked if “Defrag.exe” (the Windows file) should be kept or replaced, you may find it has disappeared completely.

On Windows 10, when I now search for “Defrag”, I get the following message:-
“Windows cannot find ‘C:\Windows\system32\dfrgui.exe’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.”

On older systems it would have been no big problem to download “Defrag.exe” anew, and install it in the appropriate position; however, with Windows 10 it is more complicated, as the file comes bundled with several others, and does not seem to be easily available at all.

I have decided to ignore “Defrag.exe” altogether, and stick with “Defraggler”. It does everything I need, with no hassles.

PS. Defragmentation takes time. The 1.8 TB drive above took about 8 hours.

TO ALL FREECELL DEVOTEES!

To those of you that do not like the games available on Windows 10, there was an alternative;- Windows 7 Games for Windows 10 and 8. However, with the constant update of Windows 10, the Windows 7 games can’t be guaranteed to work. I have had to look for an alternative, and found one:  Freecell++, version 1.8 – a program written by Piotr Bednaruk.

This program was designed for Windows XP, and has different rules when compared to that for Windows 7. If you reject a set of cards that has been presented when you select “new”, for example, you automatically lose the game you have rejected. You are no longer able to pick and choose.

No problem. The trick here is to think your way through the game before you actually start to move cards, much like the way a good player will tackle a game of chess.

This will affect your score, of course. Whereas I could clock up 200 or more straight wins with the Windows 7 version, the best I have managed so far with Piotr’s version is 31! In fact, the game is now a real challenge!

Note that the window size for this game can only be varied in the vertical direction!

At present there is a small problem, as the “Clear” function does not reset all values to zero as expected. Piotr is aware of this, and will issue a revised version hopefully soon.

Happy Gaming!

Leaving Home? Play it Safe! TransferWise!

No doubt about it – I had itchy feet! The attraction of working abroad was too much for me, and in November 1977 I left home to work in Germany. After a short stint in Hamburg, and an equally short stint back in the UK, I took on a job in Frankfurt – and never looked back! Well, that is not strictly true, as I had a family in the UK that I needed to support, and the mortgage payments on the house had to continue also.

Over the years, the banks must have made quite a bit of money out of me, as transferring money is not a particularly cheap business. At one point, I decided to transfer a large amount that I had been holding in German Marks to an account in the UK, and convert it to pounds, as it would be more convenient for what I had planned to do later. Shortly after the money was transferred, the powers that be decided to devalue the UK pound, and I lost a bundle of money over that.

I spent some time in various countries – Belgium, Holland, Thailand, The Philippines, New Zealand – and opened bank accounts where necessary. Unfortunately, I never closed these accounts tidily, and remnants of money were gradually consumed and disappeared to no good purpose. Banks are legally required to retain details of an account for 10 years, but after that anything you had left in an account is gone. Over the years, I have wasted more money than I like to think of. If there had been an easier way to deal with transfers at the time, it would have been a Godsend!

Now there is:- TransferWise!

The link above will take you to the Wikipedia entry for TransferWise. I repeat the major points below to give you an indication of what to expect.

TransferWise was founded by Taavet Hinrikus, Skype’s first employee, and financial consultant Kristo Käärmann. As Estonians working between their native country and the UK, they had personal experience of the “pain of international money transfer” due to bank charges on the amounts they needed to convert from euros to pounds and vice versa. In the words of Hinrikus, “I was losing five percent of the money each time I moved it. At the same time my co-founder Kristo Käärmann (also from Estonia) was starting to get paid in the UK and was losing a lot of money transferring cash back home to pay for a mortgage there”

Transferwise was actually on average 83% cheaper than the big four UK banks on major currency “routes”, but could be up to 90% cheaper in some occasions. TransferWise routes most payments not by transferring the sender’s money directly to the recipient as it is in the case of SWIFT, but by matching the amounts with other TransferWise’s users sending the other way around. TransferWise then uses these pools of funds to pay out transfers via local bank transfer.

Multiple currencies? No Problem. Meet the “Borderless Account”!

Once a user is approved for this account, they can hold multiple currencies concurrently, and decide when to make a transfer to best suit their financial needs. Personal local bank details can also be issued in a handful of currencies to receive payments from third parties, therefore avoiding the use of SWIFT transfers or having the sender register with TransferWise. This is similar to having a multi-currency brokerage account.

List of sending and receiving currencies supported by TransferWise (November 2019):

I know if TransferWise had been available in 1977, I would have saved a small fortune!

If you have a similar requirement, don’t hesitate, contact TransferWise as fast as possible. In my experience the people there are knowledgeable, competent, and eager to please. And if you tell them you found their details on this blog – Symphony – they will welcome you with open arms!

Don’t delay. Its your money you could be saving!

PS. The EPUB file I generated for TransferWise runs to 539 kb. If there is a requirement, I could make it available.
