Help files used to be integrated with the program you were using, but more and more I see that pressing the ‘F1’ button on the keyboard, (the standard method of invoking the help function), will result in a call to a site on the Internet.
While writing this article, I tested this function myself, and landed up at the site for my Opera browser:- “Get to know Opera“. This is logical enough, as I am running my own copy of WordPress on my computer, and I use the Opera browser to access it.
In common with other such sites, it does not give you all the information on one page, but spreads it across a range of pages which all have to be accessed individually. In this case, the list looks like this:-
This, while obviously better than nothing, I consider to be a waste of time, effort, and money! If for example, the complete series of page contents had been condensed into an “EPUB” format, or even a “PDF”, it could have been downloaded in one file and stored on your own computer, where you could refer to it whenever necessary.
Where I considered it worthwhile, I have taken the trouble to produce my own “EPUB” documents, as I consider the format superior to “PDF”. The process involves the use of a program called “SIGIL”, which is available here:- The Sigil Github Release page.
There is already a “Sigil User Guide” available in EPUB format, and to view it you will need the Azardi program, which is available here:- Download AZARDI 43.1
Make no mistake, you are probably letting yourselves in for hours and hours of work, but if you start small and get the hang of it, it gets easier as you go along.
I was really determined to complete one project, and by the time I had finished, the file size was 539kb. At least I had an overview of the system I required, and could access the details where necessary on my own computer.
Of course, having done the work to produce the document, I was already very familiar with the system when it came to actually use it.
