EU customs update: new handling fee confirmed 📦 The fee will now apply to each item sent from non-EU web shops directly to EU consumers on 1 November, on top of the EUR 3 customs duty in place since 1 July. The exact amount will be set by the European Commission and reviewed every two years. When this amount has been specified, we will confirm. The PPA has written to the EU Commission and the UK Government, using evidence provided by members, to push for publishers to be protected under the Florence Agreement. However, we're advising businesses to plan on the basis that these fees will remain. Read the full update here: https://lnkd.in/eRvGnNAU #PublicAffairs

Before rushing to make deals with AI companies, publishers need to properly evaluate the value of their content. Sajeeda Merali, PPA CEO, sets out what publishers should consider first, including: 🔍 Identify the content audiences value most and can't find elsewhere 🔒 Specialist analysis, proprietary data, and any material that isn’t easily replicated need to be protected and should be priced the highest ⚖️ Distinguish between training rights and retrieval rights 🛠️ Review crawler rules and decide what stays open or restricted 🤝 Choose the route that matches your leverage: bilateral deals, collective licensing, or marketplaces There is no single blueprint, but trusted brands, differentiated content, and direct audience relationships remain the strongest foundations. Last week, PPA CEO Sajeeda Merali spoke at Press Gazette’s Future of Media Technology Conference. The panel: Katie Palisoul (POLITICO); Sam Hall (Ascend Media); Mads Holmen (MonetizationOS); and Jason Konen (WP Engine) explored new ways to make quality journalism pay online. Key takeaways include: • Personality is key. Obsess over your audience - focus on their daily habits and where/how they consume. • Authenticity is what makes your brands indispensable. Fixate on relationships and community - look after your audiences’ needs. • Organise around relationships and building a lifetime value. Ensure you put that relationship at the heart of everything. • Prepare for scaling programmatic licensing – you need to be thinking about pricing, terms, and guardrails. #TrustedEditorialBrands #FOMT26
