“Focus on the I am rather than the I should.” We recently asked Divya Malhotra, Management Consultant at The Berkeley Partnership, what advice she’d give to women looking to progress in consulting. Her answer? Let go of the rigid five-year plan. So often we measure ourselves against what should be happening: “I should be at this level.” “My peers are doing that, so I should too.” But careers don’t always unfold on schedule. The consulting skill we’ll need most in the next 3 years isn’t AI. It’s the ability to navigate ambiguity. At our recent Women in Consulting event at The Berkeley Partnership, we asked guest speaker Divya Malhotra what she believes will change most in consulting over the next 1–3 years. Her answer was powerful. Yes, AI. Yes, robotics. Yes, technology. But that’s not the real shift. “What I’ve noticed,” she shared, “is that clients aren’t specifically looking for exact outcomes and outputs at this point. There’s a lot more uncertainty about exactly what it is they need support with.” And that changes everything. The consultants who will stand out aren’t just the most technical. They’ll be the ones who can: ✔️ Work confidently in ambiguity ✔️ Help clients define the problem before solving it ✔️ Bring clarity where there isn’t a clear brief ✔️ Stay calm when the path forward isn’t obvious In many ways, this is where consulting becomes less about frameworks — and more about judgement, empathy and leadership. We hosted an incredible evening with The Berkeley Partnership LLP, bringing together women across consulting, transformation and technology to talk honestly about what it really takes to build a career in this industry. What stood out most? Success in consulting is far less linear and far more human, than we’re often led to believe. Here are some of the key takeaways that stayed with us: 1️⃣ There is no perfectly designed career path. 2️⃣ The mid-career inflection point is real. 3️⃣ Values matter more than titles. 4️⃣ Parenthood builds leadership capability. 5️⃣ Imposter syndrome doesn’t disappear at senior level. 6️⃣ EQ will differentiate the next generation of consulting leaders. Perhaps the most powerful reminder of the evening was this: Careers in transformation are built in conversation, in community, and in moments where we choose to step forward, even when we don’t feel entirely ready.
