VATAN CELEBRATES THE FLAVORS OF GUJARAT AND THE AMBIANCE OF A TYPICAL INDIAN COURTYARD

Welcome to Vatan Indian Vegetarian, a Murray Hill and Kips Bay culinary landmark in Midtown Manhattan. For years, we have transported our guests from the hustle and bustle of New York City straight into the heart of a rustic, charming village courtyard in Gujarat, India.

Our dining room is carefully crafted with thatched roofs, hand-painted tables, visual village dioramas, and an iconic 20-foot tall banyan tree center-stage. This immersive setting provides a warm, magical atmosphere that is perfect for romantic dinners, family gatherings, corporate bookings, and special celebrations.

We specialize in the traditional Gujarati Thali—a prix fixe, all-you-can-eat table-side Thali experience consisting of distinct courses. It is a royal feast designed to let you experience the full breadth of Western Indian flavors, ranging from subtle and sweet to rich and fiery. We operate with strict dietary care, offering dedicated Jain, Swaminarayan, Vegan, Gluten-Free, and Nut-Free thalis.

LET US TRANSPORT YOU TO INDIA WHILE YOU ENJOY OUR HIGHLY ACCLAIMED PRIX FIXE THALI

Our signature meal is served in a course format featuring fresh, high-quality vegetarian ingredients. Our appetizers include classics like Samosas, Sev Puri, Muthia, and Ragda Patis. For the entree, you will receive our Toor Dal, potato curries, Bhaji (spinach and corn), Chole (chickpeas), and seasonal vegetables, accompanied by steamed Pulao, Khichdi, warm Kadhi, and freshly puffed Puris or flat Rotis.

All items in the main Thali are unlimited, allowing you to enjoy your favorites to your heart's content. We finish the meal with traditional Indian desserts and a warm cup of cardamom-infused Masala Chai. Come hungry, leave completely satisfied.

What the Critics Say

"In almost every way, Vatan is an astounding restaurant. From the outside, the windowless facade looks plain. But enter through the hallway with polished bamboo walls and you are transported to a bright, animated Indian village. [...] A complete meal is served in Gujarati fashion, consisting of a dozen or more dishes, most flavored with ghee, an Indian form of clarified butter, and garam masala, a mixture of spices."
— The New York Times (Reviewer: Eric Asimov)
An "incredible variety of flavors" from "delicate" to "spicy" emerges from the kitchen of this Murray Hill vegetarian Indian where the "authentic Gujarati" specialties come in an all-you-can-eat format [...] a transporting "village" setting completes the "totally unique experience."
— Zagat 2017
"Windowless Vatan turns its back on a drab stretch of Third Avenue; a long walk down a bamboo hall completes your geographic dislocation to an Indian village, where you find yourself standing in the central square beneath a spreading banyan tree... You don't need a menu—there's one set meal..."
— The Village Voice (Reviewer: Robert Sietsema)
"...Vatan, the East Indian oasis. You get to eat as much as you want of everything on the menu. An added bennie: there's no shlepping back and forth to the buffet, no endless passing of platters—each diner gets a huge tray thali, holding what seems like dozens of little bowls of vegetable-spice combinations and recombinations. How very, very Gujarati."
