Andreas Whittam Smith: On the basis of his speeches, my vote is for Clarke Independent Porfolio Content

Published: 03 October 2005

I have enjoyed the speeches that Ken Clarke has made since standing for leadership of the Conservative Party. They have been about terrorism, the economy and the manner in which the country is governed. He has said things that I have waited a long time to hear from a prominent Tory.

Andreas Whittam Smith: Here is a way for Britain and the United States to get out of Iraq together Independent Porfolio Content

Published: 26 September 2005

In what circumstances can the United Kingdom withdraw from Iraq? This question becomes more urgent by the day. On Friday, five Iraqi civilians were killed and 17 injured in a suicide bomb attack on a public minibus in Baghdad. Meanwhile, reports from the northern city of Mosul say 10 people were shot dead in several separate incidents on Thursday and Friday. Nothing remarkable. Rather than this carnage being exceptional, it is expected. No coalition forces were involved. It goes on whether Allied solders go out on patrol or stay in barracks.

Untruthful Blair may win, but the storm of scandal is gathering Independent Porfolio Content

Published: 25 April 2005

As we race towards election day, the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is ever more clearly exposed for what he really is. Thus far, we have learnt that he is untruthful (see the the Prime Minister's admission that he named Dr David Kelly in the interview last week with Jeremy Paxman on BBC 1). He has no regard for civil liberties (see the anti-terrorism legislation passed in the final days of the last Parliament). He has opened the door to torture of terrorist suspects (see the report by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Commons published this month).
