Joint Forces Command
Special Operations Command, United States
Joint Forces Command has the mission to train conventional
and special operations joint force commanders and their staffs
in the employment of Special Operations Forces (SOF) to enhance
warfighting readiness and interoperability.
Special Operations (SO) are those operations conducted in
hostile, denied, or politically sensitive environments to
achieve diplomatic, informational, military and/or economic
objectives employing military capabilities for which there
is no broad conventional force requirement. These operations
often require covert, clandestine or low-visibility capabilities.
SO are applicable across the range of military operations.
They can be conducted independently or in conjunction with
operations of conventional forces or other government agencies
and may include operations by, with or through indigenous
or surrogate forces.
The United States maintains special operations forces capable
of performing these difficult, complex, and sensitive missions
on short notice, in peace and war, anywhere in the world.
In support of the national military strategy, special operations
forces are currently organized and trained in nine principal
mission areas:
• Counter proliferation (CP)
• Combating terrorism (CBT)
• Foreign internal defense (FID)
• Special reconnaissance (SR)
• Direct action (DA)
• Psychological operations (PSYOP)
• Civil affairs (CA)
• Unconventional warfare (UW)
• Information operations (IO)
Located in Norfolk, Va. near the Joint
Warfighting Center and Joint Experimentation Center, Special Operations
Command’s
key tasks are:
(1) Train conventional joint forces (Regional Combatant Commanders & Joint
Task Force staff) in SOF employment considerations.
(2) Support the training programs of joint SOF commanders
and staff to enhance warfighting readiness.
(3) Ensure training insights are incorporated into and informed
by Joint Concept Development & Experimentation and Joint
Interoperability efforts.
(4) Support USJFCOM-USSOCOM staff interaction.
(5) Collect and share lessons learned for joint special operations
forces operations worldwide.
By supporting the realistic joint training and integration
of special operations forces, Special Operations Command
accomplishes requirements specified in both the Joint Forces
Command's unified command plan and the U.S. Special Operations
Command responsibilities.
