What You Should Know:
Each year
the battery industry improves the technology used in
laptop batteries. Currently, the industry's favorite is
lithium-ion based batteries. These batteries last longer
than older batteries made out of Ni-Cad and Ni-Mh. They
also don't suffer memory deterioration, such as the
"memory effect."
Common
Terms for Laptop Batteries
Amp (A):
a form of measurement for the amount of resistance the energy in your battery produces in order to power your laptop.
Amp Hours (Ah): the amount of time a laptop battery discharges before it needs to be recharged.
milliAmp hours (mAh): 1000mAh equals 1Ah.
Volt (V): a term used in determining the measurement of the amount of pressure the positive and negative electrodes produce in a battery during the process of discharging
energy.

Battery Tips:
It
is recommended that a brand new laptop
battery be "broken in" before
serious use. Simply charge your new
battery to full capacity. Then run it down
until you need to switch to your AC power
adapter. Repeat this process 3-4 times.
You may notice that the battery will run
longer off of each charge if you perform
this simple procedure. This will also
prolong the life of your battery.
If
you are not going to be running your
laptop on battery power for one or more
months, charge it to full capacity and
take it out of the laptop. Store it in a
cool and dry place. Though this is not
required, you will usually be able to keep
your battery for 3-5 years instead of 1-3
years.
If
your battery is running low on juice and
you cannot switch to a power adapter,
dimming your screen and turning off all
nonessential programs will lighten the
load on your battery and give you much
more time on battery power.
Are
you thinking about replacing your laptop
battery? The following are a few ways to
check if you should replace your battery:
Charge
your laptop battery to full power
using your AC power adapter. Then keep
track of the length of time your
battery charges your laptop. If your
battery stops powering your laptop
within an hour, it may be time to get
a new battery.
We
recommend that you use "laptop
battery tester," a free software
program to test your battery. It runs
a test on your battery and records the
data. We recommend you run the test
every 4-6 weeks. The program will let
you compare each of the test results
so you can see how your battery is
performing. One major advantage to
this program is that it will show you
at what point your battery's output
decreases the most. If you notice
sharp decreases in the amount of time
your battery powers your laptop it may
be time to replace it. Click
here to learn more and to
download the program.
