"Come to terms with stress, fatigue and catastrophic failure", read the poster in the underground station many years ago. It turned out to be an advertisement encouraging young people to read engineering at a London University. As an engineer myself, the message caught my attention immediately, but I wonder if it reached its intended audience. Engineering is a curiously introverted profession, without which life would swiftly grind to a halt, but engineers seem incapable of communicating the excitement of their calling to the population at large.
