SNS@ISC: Secondary Name Service

Mission

SNS@ISC is an infrastructure service for publication of DNS zone data to the global Internet with maximum availability and minimum delay. Customers of SNS@ISC operate their own primary name servers where they manage their DNS zone data, and then SNS@ISC transfers this zone data to one or more of our globally anycast name server clusters. End users will see extremely high availability and short response times when they look up domain names whose DNS zones are served by SNS@ISC.

Available for nonprofit / public benefit customers

SNS@ISC serves 60+ top level domains in addition to hundreds of Internet infrastructure, public benefit / nonprofit, and partner domains. These DNS zones are served using ISC's global anycast network, the same network that serves F-Root. For committed response times, contracts will be available. (Due to ISC's non-profit status, we can not extend our public benefit services to political or religious organizations).

Available for commercial customers

We welcome commercial enterprises to bring their DNS zones to SNS@ISC and we can host them on our dedicated globally and regionally anycasted name servers within multiple commercial ISPs. SNS@ISC can be used either as a DNS zone's only name service, or in conjunction with other in-house or outsourced name services.

Customer qualifications

SNS@ISC customers must run their own primary name servers on which they will create and maintain their own DNS zone data. A customer's primary name servers need not be publically reachable, if for security reasons a customer prefers not to bring outside queries into their datacenters. SNS@ISC can provide all, or some, of any of a DNS zone's name service, and so we can be a sole provider (for full outsourcing) or we can be one of many (for vendor diversity).

ISC qualifications

Since its inception in 1995, ISC has maintained, supported, and published the BIND software system that operates about 80% of the Internet's name servers. In fact, some of ISC's founding employees have supported BIND since 1989. ISC also operates the F-root server, one of the busiest root name servers on the Internet, and the first root name server to deploy anycast technology in multiple continents. No company in the world today has deeper knowledge or expertise about DNS software, technology, and operations than ISC. Through SNS@ISC, we stand ready to make our expertise available to old and new customers who want the best possible DNS zone data publication.
