heading out - happy, merry, joyous, peaceful, prosperous etc to all! enjoy the leap second, and we'll see you in 2009! /cb
@bethdeel what do 11000 bouncy balls sound like when they hit ground? inquiring minds want to know!
@wookiehangover i think leap second arrives around 7pm where i am... guessing i'll have time for one sip of coffee around then ;) /cb
@Sonya thanks, we had fun with that shopping segment
hey, does this 850-lb, $370 million emerald belong to anyone here? http://is.gd/eeKI (sadly with rather unimpressive, non-shiny picture) /cb
@kvanh that would be worth seeing! was last there during an unusually quiet period - some of the periodic geysers were inactive at the time
should note that yellowstone has 1000 to 2000 small quakes a year. what's unusual here is 'swarm' of activity and energy of quakes involved
@kellenfujimoto alert level is for volcanic eruptions. they haven't seen any sudden ground swelling etc to indicate any eruption imminent
@mandydax indeed: Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL.
@trianglman should note tho that the volcano watch level for yellowstone area remains at 'normal'. AP story abt swarm: http://is.gd/e7ax
@trianglman activity is centered on the east side of the caldera, but they say cannot identify any causative fault w/o further analysis.
"swarm of earthquakes has been underway since December 26" in Yellowstone National Park. hundreds of minor quakes. http://is.gd/eeDq /cb
hmmm... @AFBR points out this story http://tinyurl.com/797ewr "Honey laundering: A sticky trail of intrigue and crime"
@TamarBatAvraham UK is ahead of the US time zone wise, so they get to the New Year first. US gets the bonus second early evening on Dec 31
@tcsauter extra second is because of the next big crisis: global slowing. don't panic, but the earth's spin is slowing down.
@Gservo should be starting this Fri 1/2, at 3pm...we'll be on WNYC fm
officially tho - since the extra second is added at 23:59:60 GMT, the master clock at US Naval Observatory gets the second at 6:59:60 pm EST
@SloTwitch1 not sure how the world's professional New Years thing-droppers are planning to handle leap second. Maybe "1...1 and a half..0?"
nice pics of the shiny new LED-ized New Years ball that will be dropped in Times Square this year http://is.gd/ebul /cb
census bureau says projected 1/1/2009 U.S. population will be 305,529,237 - up 2,743,429, or 0.9 percent, from 1/12008. /cb
