A YouTube Glimpse at Next Year's Huskies
Posted Mar, 23 at 12:18 pm by Damon Agnos, The Daily WeeklySaturday's loss to Purdue was a bummer, though for all their heart, this year's Dawgs didn't quite have the talent to run with the nation's elite.
Next year may be different, however. The talented Quincy Pondexter has regained his confidence and improved his game to the point where an NBA career once again appears to be a possibility. And while the team loses toughness and leadership in Jon Brockman and Justin Dentmon, it gains a whole lot of flash with its incoming class, ranked 15th in the nation.
So what better way for devout Dawg fans/hoop dorks to console ourselves than to watch YouTube highlights of next year's stars?Topics: Sports -
Ex-Husky Conroy Becomes All-Time Leader in D-League POW Awards
Posted Mar, 23 at 11:14 am by Mike Seely, The Daily WeeklyFor Husky fans attempting to raise their chins from a season-long run of unexpected glory that came up two points short in the round of 32, a little shot in the arm: ex-UW point guard Will Conroy just became the NBDL's all-time leader in Player of the Week awards with his fourth.
Conroy has enjoyed a dream season with the D-League's Albuquerque franchise. But for as good as he's been all year, last week's averages of 25.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 12.7 assists were truly out-of-this-world, rivaled only by do-everything NBA megastars like LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Somebody call this kid up, already.Topics: Sports -
Miso Ramen: Less Pork, More Butter
Posted Mar, 23 at 11:08 am by Jonathan Kauffman, Voracious
Thin Wheat Line is a weekly exploration of noodles in Seattle.
Noodle: Miso ramen
Source: Samurai Noodle, 606 Fifth Ave. S., 624-9321.
Price: Oh, dear. I forgot. I'll update when I find my receipt.
So I made it, what, five months? six? without mentioning the city's favorite ramen spot in this column. That's mostly because I did a ramen roundup a year ago, but also partly because I get more worked up about Samurai's tonkotsu broth than the actual noodles. But a while back, I passed a sign on the door advertising a new miso ramen, and it seemed a good excuse to remedy the omission.Topics: Thin Wheat Line -
Tonight's Show Suggestion: Rasputina
Posted Mar, 23 at 10:59 am by Jonathan Cunningham, ReverbRasputina, with Ruby Throat at Neumos. 8 p.m. $15
The brainchild of Kansas-born, Brooklyn-residing singer-cellist Melora Creager, Rasputina is like one of Edward Gorey's wet dreams come to life: a captivating combination of chamber music, doomy goth-metal textures, corsets lifted from a Victorian boudoir and loads of twisted black humor. An in-demand session cellist who's worked with the likes of Nirvana, Bob Mould, Belle & Sebastian, Marilyn Manson and the Goo Goo Dolls, Creager founded Rasputina as an all-female, all-cello group in 1992. Since then, the band has evolved to include percussion and male members. More than a dozen people have come and gone over the years; longtime drummer Jonathan TeBeest left at the end of 2008. As Creager once told me, "Often people think it's such a great project that it's about to get big, and they're gonna be there when it gets big, but it just doesn't go like that, and then they get disillusioned." Still, as long as Creager wants to keep Rasputina going, the shows should remain visually arresting and musically captivating. MICHAEL ALAN GOLDBERGTopics: Happenings -
Victory for Wizards, Feminism, and All Nerd-Kind
Posted Mar, 23 at 10:54 am by Laura Onstot, The Daily WeeklyI was in Portland this weekend so I missed the great Harry (as in Potter) v. Edward (as in angsty, shiny vampire) debate at the Seattle Public Library. But I take great joy in reporting that the Potter fans successfully defended their champion with the audience voting 120 to 40 in favor of J.K. Rowling's series.
Full disclosure, I'm a little biased. I own a pair of Harry Potter spectacles. While in England I actually went to the restricted section of the library. Just thinking about the John Williams score to the films gives me a chill. When the seventh book came out, I was running a fever but dragged my sorry ass out of bed to wait in line at midnight at an Evanston, Ill. Borders anyway. And as a head's up to my editors, I'm calling in sick July 17 after the midnight showing of the sixth installment at Cinerama *cough, cough*.Topics: Books & Authors -

James Beard Awards Nominees
Posted Mar, 23 at 8:15 am by Maggie Dutton, VoraciousThe James Beard Foundation is in the middle of announcing the finalists for this year's James Beard Awards, on Twitter right now. Seattle's Rebekah Denn has been nominated in the Best Newspaper Feature with Recipes category. Ms. Denn's comments on the nomination: "This is about the nicest thing that's happened to a newly unemployed food writer." (and Rebekah, I will totally buy you that drink.) Suck it, Hearst.
Congratulations to Seattle nominees for Best Chef: Northwest - Maria Hines (Tilth), Joseba Jiménez de Jiménez (Harvest Vine, Txori), Jason Wilson (Crush) and Ethan Stowell (How to Cook a Wolf, Union, Tavolata, Anchovies & Olives) It was almost a total Seattle sweep. Suck it, Portland.
And once again Tom Douglas (Dahlia Lounge, Etta's, Palace Kitchen, Lola, et al) has been nominated in the category of Outstanding Restaurateur.
Now I am going to un-follow the James Beard Foundation because, though I love their work, the tweeting is out of control.Topics: News -
Where the P-I Went
Posted Mar, 23 at 8:11 am by Rick Anderson, The Daily WeeklyWhat happened to those 100-plus members of the P-I staff after the print edition folded - and didn't stay on at the ePI? Rebekah Denn, who is one of them, is making at list. The former P-I food writer/critic keeps a running count on who went where, via her own web site, Eat All About It, which is where she went.
More than a few others have also migrated to web sites, she reports, including photogs Gilbert Arias, Paul Joseph Brown, Karen Ducey, Meryl Schenker, Robert Sumner, and Jim Bryant, and a number of writers have turned to blogging: Cecilia Goodnow, Regina Hackett, Leslie Kelly, and Philippa Kiraly. Also with their own websites or blogging - and doing other work - are investigative reporter Andrew Schneider, aerospace writer Jim Wallace, pop music writer Gene Stout, reporter Jennifer Langston, environmental writers Lisa Stiffler and Robert McClure, editor John Levesque, and graphic artist Wendy Wahman.
Former copy editor Christina Okeson has a blog, too. It's called Chrisitina Unemployed. What did she do yesterday, for example? She decorated her site with an empty couch. She also accomplished "the utter glory of motherhood, which included watching old sci-fi movies then baking a cake with The Boy, and loving The Girl when she fell asleep in my arms (Mama bliss!). More cleaning of my scrapping area. A bit of job hunting. Installed and took a quick tour of my new camera..." And she's working on her unemployment application.Topics: Seattle Post-Intelligencer -
Westsiders Talk Tunnel
Posted Mar, 23 at 8:08 am by Damon Agnos, The Daily WeeklyIf you weren't taking a walking tour of the closed-to-vehicle-traffic Viaduct this weekend, you might have noticed some nasty traffic in other parts of the city. (We might add that the decision to combine the Viaduct closure with heavy maintenance work on 1st Avenue South was a stroke of G, a true WSDOT/SDOT synergy.)
So naturally, the forthcoming four-year construction of a deep bore tunnel has some concerned. Particularly those living on the west side of the city.
To assuage those concerns--or at least answer some questions--the Ballard and Queen Anne District Councils are teaming up with the Ballard Interbay Northend Manufacturing and Industrial Center Action Committee (BINMICAC, natch) to put on a forum tonight at Ballard High School. Panelists will include city and state reps and experts in tunnel construction. Among the questions they'll address:Topics: Transportation -
Random: Awesome Guitarists Rarely Mentioned For Being Awesome Guitarists
Posted Mar, 23 at 8:08 am by Brian J Barr, ReverbTotally random list below. Each one mentioned is famous in his or her own right, but not for being great guitarists. Feel free to mention some more in the Comments thread.
Bob Dylan
Not that he needs more recognition for his greatness. Still, I was listening to his album of ancient folk songs, World Gone Wrong, the other night, and was struck by his style. Raw, bright, thorny, and very thought-out.Topics: Random - Older
