Spring 2009 Auditions

08 Jan 2009 After 232 years of hard work, John Hendrix has finally graduated and left us bereft of silky smooth high notes. That means we're definitely looking for new singers (particularly strong tenors)! If you're interested in singing with us, come out to our auditions on the third floor of the Student Center on Wednesday, January 21, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Please click here to sign up for an audition slot. During the first round of auditions, we lead you through some scales to check your range, tonal memory to assess how well you learn by ear, and a short sight reading passage. We'll also have you sing a solo of your choosing, so come prepared. During the initial round, we're looking for musical ability, stage presence, and confidence (this is a KEY element to a successful audition). We look forward to seeing you at auditions! Don't forget to practice your Captain Morgan pose! For more information please contact our music director or click on about us and scroll down to audition criteria.

SoJam 2008 Results!

09 Nov 2008 SympVibes took home the silver this year at SoJam! The UNCG Sapphires placed first, while FSU's All Night Yahtzee pulled up the rear with a respectable 3rd place. Our very own Paul Koziel nabbed the Best Male Vocal Percussion award for his insane skills while Scott Johnson was awarded the Best Male Soloist award for owning "The Warmth" - Incubus. While not an official award, newcomer John "Le Bob" Zelek was also recognized with the prestigious "Dude Chicks Want" award that our own Ryan Ceciliani and Scott Johnson managed to nab the previous two years.

The weekend was filled with a cappella goodness in the form of competition, workshops, master classes, and pro group performances by Firedrill! and Fork. For videos of our Friday night performance, click on the image to the right. If you like what you see, buy tickets to one or both of our shows this weekend in our online store or on Skiles this week. We have a great set list planned for you and we guarantee you'll have a good time, or your money back. Just kidding. But not really. Only about the money. You're not getting that back.

SoJam 2008

28 Oct 2008 After long preparation, vigorous rehearsals, thrown voices, and missed dance steps, Symp Vibes has been selected to compete in SoJam 2008!! We'll be traveling to Raleigh, NC on November 7-9 to compete against other top groups in the southeast:
UF Sedoctaves
UNCG Sapphires

Aftershock Reviewed by RARB

12 Oct 2008 SympVibes new album, Aftershock, just received a great rating by Jonathan Minkoff, Elie Landau, and John Colton of the Recorded A Cappella Review Board. Our thanks go out to the reviewers! For the full reviews, visit RARB's website. Here's what they had to say about the album:

"[...]my favorite track is Long Line of Cars. The ending is a lovely cacophony of chord clusters and layered faux horns. Mr. Brightside's full-on alt lead is also a winner." - Jonathan Minkoff

"[...]the group's tight sound serves them well on these tracks and the arrangements show a development and a variation in texture[...]" - Elie Landau

"I generally believe in listening to an album in the original track order, and I'm especially glad I did so here because I enjoyed the song placement." - John Colton

What's a SympVibe?

Sympathetic Vibrations (SympVibes) is an all-male a capella group founded in the Fall of 1997 by James Clawson. We usually have 12-15 active members as well as some members who are on co-op rotations or other various diversions. We arrange all our own music (mostly pop and classic rock) and rehearse 3 times weekly. We perform for various GT and private events and also hold a few of our own concerts at various campus venues each semester.

Audition Criteria

SympVibes holds auditions each semester during the first or second week of school. Our auditions include two rounds--an initial round where we lead you through some scales to check your range, tonal memory to assess how well you learn by ear, and sightreading to check your musical reading abilities. We'll also have you sing a solo from a song you'd hear on the radio. Mostly during the initial round we're looking for musical ability, stage presence, and confidence (this is a KEY element to a successful audition).

Callbacks are by invitation only, and there you'll get a chance to sing with the whole group. We typically run callbacks similarly to a regular rehearsal, except we'll ask you to sing one-per-part after you've learned the music in order to assess how quickly and effectively you've learned it. During callbacks we really look for confidence and personality, and we want to see how you fit in with the group. We'll also listen for blend and solo ability, so please step up for a solo if you know some of the music we sing.

Lastly, one thing that we look for throughout the audition process is commitment. We spend a lot of time rehearsing, gigging, recording, etc. and it is absolutely necessary that you understand the commitment that it takes to be in this group. Please let us know what your other commitments and priorities are--it is much easier to resolve conflicts early on.

We look forward to seeing you at auditions! For more information please contact our music director.
