Intel IT performed a technology evaluation and verified that netbooks cannot replace our users' laptop and desktop PCs due to several factors. Our study suggests that netbooks potentially could become companion devices that employees use in select situations and locations. We plan to continue investigating these usage models to determine the potential for enterprise deployment.
How can you get the most out of your PC purchases? How do you know when your PC support costs are more than the cost to purchase new PCs? At Intel, we've developed a comprehensive methodology, based on total cost of ownership (TCO), that lets us calculate the real cost of operating more than 90,000 PCs. Using it, we can understand the real cost of deploying and maintaining our PCs across varying time horizons.
As more services are delivered via cloud computing, which combination of client platforms and service delivery methods best meets the needs of users and IT organizations? Intel IT has found that whether services are kept in-house or outsourced to the cloud, the ability to perform local computing on the client offers the best user experience and the flexibility to run different types of applications. Rich clients support the full range of service delivery methods and provide mobile computing capabilities for our users.

Intel IT security specialists have identified significant new enterprise security use cases that we can implement using Intel vPro technology. We focused on three high-priority, high-value categories—e-Discovery and investigations, data protection and loss prevention, and system health and updates—and successfully performed lab tests to validate each use case. Potential benefits include fewer labor-intensive deskside visits, increased security, and greater user productivity. As we continue to deploy Intel vPro technology throughout our environment, we plan to further investigate these use cases for enterprise implementation.
