Food Roundup for January 28

Here's what was being written about today in the world of food and dining news:

  • Stick a Fork In It kicks things off by telling you way more than you ever wanted to know about eating Ethiopian food. See? Learning can be fun.

Chocolate Millennium Falcon

Sadly, we have absolutely no context for the picture below other than the fact that it's totally awesome. But, if for some reason you're not satisfied with a chocolate Millennium Falcon perched atop a glass of milk, you can kill a bit of time by watching the creation of a Millennium Falcon cake for The Food Network's Ace of Cakes. Either way, we say you're a winner.

Restaurant Review Extravaganza (Week of January 25th)

Here are some of this week's most noteworthy restaurant reviews from across the country:

Broward-Palm Beach

Anatolia Mediterranean Cuisine / Al Bawadi

Initial impressions play a big part in setting the tone for a meal, as I found out while visiting two Mediterranean restaurants recently. The first experience happened at Anatolia Mediterranean Cuisine, an attractive, year-old Turkish restaurant near Mizner Park in Boca Raton. More >>

Dallas

India West

There are two possible reasons why India West's dining room was so sparsely populated the evening of my final visit. More >>

"Although India West is a new restaurant, its owner and kitchen staff have served curry for more than 20 years."

Unsolicited Advice at the Grocery Store

Naked-Juice.jpg

I was on my way home from a workout when I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a couple things for dinner. My goal was to do a quick in and out before my sweat-soaked clothes rendered my body temperature below freezing. Holding a basket of items, I stopped to look at a selection of Naked juices (those foo foo hippy fruit and vegetable blend juices that contain boosts, protein and ground up narwhal horn). From behind me I heard a voice:

"Need help finding anything?"

I turned around and noticed a store employee standing two feet away from me, grinning. I smiled and politely declined, saying "No thanks, just looking." I then turned around and resumed browsing through juice flavors. Then:

"Want to know what MY favorite flavor is?"

Here's what was being written about today in the world of food and dining news:

  • Fat City gets the ball rolling by offering up an assortment of tea-time cocktails. No matter how much you sauce 'em up, they're still healthy...because of the tea.

McDonald's Termination Judged Too Severe, "It Is Just a Slice of Cheese"

Cheese-Slice.gif
Not the piece of cheese in question.

A court in the Netherlands has determined that McDonald's overreacted when they fired an employee for adding a piece of cheese to what was paid for as an ordinary hamburger. Obviously cheese does not come standard on a hamburger, so adding a slice (even for a friend / coworker) is tantamount to stealing. The woman was fired back in March of last year, for breaking rules "prohibiting free gifts to family, friends or colleagues."

BBC News is reporting that "McDonald's was ordered to pay the former employee more than 4,200 euros ($5,900; £3,660) for the last five months of her contract." and in the court's decision, the judge stated, "The dismissal was too severe a measure. It is just a slice of cheese."

Fish on a Plane: Starring Salmon L. Jackson

It was high time someone knocked Snakes on a Plane down a peg, that movie had been cashing in on its critical acclaim for far too long. Now, roughly four years after its release, Ivar's has been displaying the following poster parodying the cult hit.

Timely? Maybe not. But we'd expect nothing less than this level of brilliance from the company that brought us the 1980s classic, Dances with Clams.

The Mocha Lisa

In the same spirit as Cheeto Conan O'Brien, one reader alerted us to this time-lapse video of a similar artistic creation. Built for an annual coffee festival in Sydney, Australia, the portrait required over 3,600 cups of coffee in varying shades. The shades were adjusted by controlling the amount of milk in each cup, and although we're pretty impressed with the end result, we're not sure the subject of this portrait is quite as iconic as Mr. O'Brien.
