Crocs Is Donating 100,000 Pairs of Shoes to Japan

Crocs CEO John McCarvel announced today that his company is giving 100,000 pairs of its funny-looking but very practical shoes to victims of the earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent disasters going on in Japan. They'll be distributed through Feed the Children, the Japanese Red Cross Society, and other helpful organizations. [Racked National]

Cintra Wilson Wrote Her Last ‘Critical Shopper’ Column for the Times Today

Photo: cintrawilson.com

Today's "Critical Shopper" piece in the Times reviewed the United Nude store on Bond Street, and it started off more or less the way most of Cintra Wilson's pieces do. She began with some highbrow references — in this case, it was the distinction between Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and his son, Rem D. Koolhaas, who's the creative director of United Nude (in past cases, she's ruminated on the number of 500-euro notes in circulation, or patriarchal social engineering). She then addressed the store itself, which is decorated with "a shiny black jewel-faceted art thing that looks sort of like a fetal Lamborghini," and expounded upon the shoes themselves, some of which "look like what happens when a chubby little pair of Crocs is picked up at a nightclub and ends up passed out in a hotel sauna." Oh, Cintra.

But, then — goodbye? »

Katie Holmes Is Dressing for Spring in Ralph Lauren

Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images

Katie Holmes attended the premiere of new miniseries The Kennedys in Beverly Hills yesterday wearing an eggshell-blue knitted sundress from Ralph Lauren's spring 2011 collection. She paired the dress with beige strappy heels and a gold necklace bearing a pendant with the letter S carved into it.

How do you like the casual direction of this outfit for a premiere event? Should she have dressed it up — and how?

The Sartorialist Gets Flak for Calling One of His Subjects ‘Curvy’

Sartorialist Scott Schuman posted two photos of fellow fashion blogger Angelica Ardasheva on his site yesterday. Schuman usually says a few words about why he posts what he posts, and in the case of Ardasheva, he writes that he "loved that she's a bigger, curvier girl than most of the other bloggers who you see in the press and tend to represent the genre."

Last we checked it's not just the industry's BLOGGERS who are thin. »

Do you have a royal wedding countdown widget yet? No? You're so behind, you royal wedding slacker, you! Here, today's major breaking royal wedding news to put a halt to this carelessness.

• Kate supposedly had her bachelorette party. A source says: "She has already had her hen night, but it was certainly very low-key. There isn’t such a tradition attached to hen nights as there is to stag parties. It was done privately. Not all of Kate’s friends were there, and she will be catching up with other friends over the coming weeks." She can't be falling drunk out of limos at 4 a.m. if the queen has approved her marrying into the royal family. Only people born royal can get away with that. [Telegraph UK]

• The three parties taking place after the ceremony will be held in more than nineteen rooms of Buckingham Palace's 775. So, no one spill on the queen's pillows, even though she spills on herself. [E! Online]

Elizabeth Taylor’s Jewelry Collection Might Be Auctioned

Taylor, wearing her favorite gem: the 69-carat Taylor-Burton diamond, which was purchased for more than $1 million.

Sources tell People that Elizabeth Taylor's collection of jewelry, with an estimated value of $150 million, will be auctioned at Christie's. Luxury Jewels of Beverly Hills president and CEO Peter Sedghi worked with Liz on her House of Taylor jewelry line and says she knew more about jewels than he did. And she was wise to make her love of jewelry so well known, according to friend and jeweler Lorraine Schwartz:

“The studios, in order to make her happy, they’d always give her jewelry. So she grew up collecting it,” she explains. “People always gave her gifts … it was something that she learned to love.” And she took great care of them, too. “She [had] collections and collections, and rooms. She [knew] where every single piece was. [It was] amazing.”

Christian Siriano Is Headlining Nashville Fashion Week

Photo: PatrickMcMullan.com, Nashville Fashion Week

Lots of cities have fashion weeks — Aspen, Austin (where models pay to partake), Los Angeles — but they seldom build reputations that convince anyone in fashion to take them seriously. Yet Racked National is pretty excited about Nashville Fashion Week. Like New York Fashion Week, it even has a big car sponsor (Lexus) and includes shows by Christian Siriano, which the schedule labels a "headliner," and Betsey Johnson, who is not labeled a headliner. Tickets are still for sale on the NFW website, where an all-access pass is only $250. For an additional $20 you can also buy a ticket to see New York person and People's Revolution owner Kelly Cutrone shill her book. But what you can't put a price on are the runway's mind-blowing, directional-redefining fox vikings!!!

Also showing: Gaultier's early fashion sketches, Polaroids by Andy Warhol, and a teddy bear that the designer affixed with paper breasts when he was but a wee child.

Bill Cunningham Used to Design ‘Exotic’ Hats That Even His Own Mother Wouldn’t Wear

Before Bill Cunningham became the founder of street style photography, he was a less-than-successful milliner working under the name William J because his family was "embarrassed" by his flamboyant pursuits. He designed his first hat for his mom to wear to the 1939 World's Fair (aw!), but she refused to do so. “I don’t think we sold many,” Cunningham recalled to the Times. “Everything I did was a little too exotic — you know, for normal people.” [Lens/NYT]

Kari Sigerson and Miranda Morrison Leave Sigerson Morrison

Kari Sigerson and Miranda Morrison quit their design jobs at their eponymous shoe brand on March 15, twenty years after they co-founded it in 1991. Neither the designers nor the label's parent company, Marc Fisher Footwear, will discuss details of their departure, but it's probably related to yesterday's announcement that the line is getting an overhaul, complete with different price points for both the signature collection and the diffusion line, Belle.

Sigerson and Morrison are sticking together. »

Reports: Chanel’s American Employees Groaned When Blake Lively Became a Face of the Brand

Apparently "internal grumblings" ensued at Chanel USA when Lively became their purse ambassador. A source adds that the bitching revolves around her "off-brand look." The source is anonymous because Chanel would "literally fire anyone who admits" to thinking Lively's deal is annoying. Maybe they're just not ready — it was all a lot to take in. [NYDN]

Tavi Is Turning Her Blog Away From Fashion

She blogs, just a few days before her blog turns three:

Fashion Week is weird. It is very high schooly. Someone will take that and decide that it means Fashion Week highschooliness is getting me down hard without realizing how highschooly what they're doing is. I love fashion but it's disappointing when you have to sift through a lot of junk before you get to, like, the clothes, and the whole point of it all. It's more disappointing when the clothes aren't very interesting. Lately I've been looking to other places for a creative outlet and for inspiration. I miss following magazines and obsessively checking style.com the way I used to but something is different about it now. A year ago I got to go to Paris to interview John Galliano at Dior, and a couple weeks ago today he said he loved Hitler and got fired.

Vogue Style Director Alexandra Kotur Is Leaving for Town & Country

This month, former Men's Vogue editor Jay Fielden took over Town & Country after Stephen Drucker left. Fielden will continue with the makeover of the title started by Drucker, who put Lauren Santo Domingo and her bare legs on the cover of the spring fashion issue, and said, "There are many ways to be rich these days. We just wanted to make it feel modern and a little sexier." Also: "I love any page with the words ‘price on request’ six times." The creative director of that issue, David Lipman, will be replaced by Alexandra Kotur, who has been serving as style director for another magazine that showcases many ways to be rich: Vogue.

Best Bet: Obesity and Speed Zipper Dress

In a city packed with fast fashion chains, the same printed tank dresses can seem to be duplicated in every store. This Zipper dress by Obesity and Speed pairs a modern print with a subtly vintage-inspired silhouette. The asymmetric flap at the waist adds a bit of volume without being as over-the-top (read: difficult to pull off) as a full-on peplum skirt. While the frill might seem precious in a feminine floral print, it looks fresh in stark black and white.

Obesity and Speed Zipper dress, $194 at Oak or online.
