Licence
MediaWiki is free software licensed under version 2 of the GNU General Public License. Because MediaWiki is licensed free of charge, there is no warranty, to the extent permitted by applicable law. Read the full text of the GNU GPL version 2 for details.
System Requirements
MediaWiki requires PHP 5.1+ and either MySQL, PostgreSQL, or SQLite. For more information please read the system requirements.

Warning:PHP 5.3.1 has a bug in it and is not supported by MediaWiki. You should use PHP 5.3.0 or PHP 5.3.2+ instead.
However, due to a security issue with PHP it is strongly advised to use PHP 5.2.17+ or PHP 5.3.5+ (see here for more details)

Notes
- PHP 5 support has been required since MediaWiki 1.7 - if you are using PHP 4 you should upgrade now! It's no longer supported by the PHP group, and has lots of bugs. Many shared hosting providers offer both PHP 4 and PHP 5, running simultaneously, your provider might do this. If you cannot upgrade then you should use MediaWiki 1.6.12 (download). Note that this version is no longer supported.
- MySQL 4 support has been required since MediaWiki 1.6 - if you are using an older version of MySQL and cannot upgrade then you should use MediaWiki 1.5.8 (download). Note that this version is no longer supported, but should still support PHP 4 as well.

- If you want to run on the latest development (i.e. alpha) version, you either have to use subversion or download nightly dump.
