This is the battle order of the 9th US Air Force while on its brief stay in England during the Second World War (1943-1944). The lists in no way does justice to the depth of planning and logistics involved in setting up, running and moving a complete air force in a very short space of time. It serves as a guide in understanding the scale of the operations and locations of individual units and forms a basis for further research. This listing is not complete and should be considered as work in progress. Hopefully it is sufficiently detailed at this point in time for you to find it of some small value.
The layout of this section is basically in five parts:
Battle Order
Ultimately lists each individual plane under the appropriate sub section. In the future we hope to include appropriate photographs of the planes and nose art together with history of the individual plane.
The layout of the pages follows the structure given below, such that, to view details of an individual plane crew for example, it is necessary to drill down to the appropriate page.
Personnel
Breakdown of all 9th Air Force personnel from officers to enlisted staff. We would appreciate receiving either present or past photos of individual members of 9th Air Force to add to this site.
Chronicle
General reports on daily missions during the period.
Airfields
Information about the bases used by the 9th Air Force, including past and present status.
Planes
General summary specification of plane types used by the 9th Air Force.
WARNING
The change to this web site as a result of the amagamation of the BOTNA group has resulted in a revamp of the old 9th history pages. Until this is complete you can view the old pages here.
