4 New Nail Polish Colors to Wear to a Wedding

Apr 11, 2012 @ 12:20 pm

We often hear the question ‘round these offices: What nail polish looks great with a wedding dress? While our answer ranges—it depends on the bride, really—tried-and-true nail star Essie Weingarten of Essie came up with her own solution: Her new Vow to Wow bridal-inspired palette. The four-piece lineup is full of demure, pastel hues that go beyond the sheer neutrals you typically see. “I’m dedicating the collection to brides who are confident and want to have fun with color,” Weingarten told InStyle.com exclusively. “The pale shades are marvelously understated, and complement the new neutral shades of bridal fashions.” Preview all of the colors in the gallery, and shop them for $8 each at salons and essie.com later this month.

4 Ways to Wear Gold Nail Polish

RihannaTaylor SwiftAbbie Cornish, and Brooklyn Decker all gave their manis the Midas touch when they stepped out with shimmering gold polish, a shade we love because of how it can look both edgy and elegant. Rihanna put a new spin on the French manicure by adding metallic tips to a chalk white nail; Swift and Cornish wore their lacquers with white dresses; and Decker matched her nails to the gold sleeves of her J. Mendel gown. As these stars prove, the shade looks stunning paired with outfits in light and dark colors alike—save for a blinged-out 24-karat ensemble, which would appear too busy. Thanks to the black and white details on Decker’s dress, the result wasn’t too matchy-matchy. See more great celebrity-inspired nail polish ideas in the gallery.

First Look: Thakoon for NARS Nail Polish Collection

Apr 6, 2012 @ 12:35 pm

Francois Nars and designer Thakoon Panichgul—whose fans include Rachel Bilson, Jessica Alba and Michelle Obama—are frequent collaborators, working together during New York Fashion Week. This season they’ve developed a limited-edition, six-color nail polish collection, making it the first nail collaboration NARS has ever done with a fashion designer. Inspired by the vibrant colors found in Indian Spice Markets, each shade is named after a spice or medicinal plant, including Koliary (cyan blue) and Anardana (azalea pink). The high-gloss hues are long-wearing, chip-resistant, formaldehyde-free and come in eye-popping brights just right for spring. Click through the gallery to preview the entire collection now, and shop them for $18 each at narscosmetics.com starting May 1st.

Try It Now: Red Nail Polish With a Blue Dress

Apr 3, 2012 @ 11:45 am

What’s a good nail polish color to go with a blue dress? Take a cue from Kristen Stewart’s Kid’s Choice Awards look and try bright red. “I wanted to play off of the blue in her dress with a bright lacquer,” her manicurist Ashlie Johnson said of the Twilight star’s color choice, Chanel’s Rouge Carat ($26 at chanel.com). When using bold colors like this, Johnson recommends sealing the free edge of the nail with a horizontal swipe of polish. “This helps the color stay on longer and gives off a more finished appearance,” she said.
