Independent Handbag Designer Awards: Four Weeks Left to Submit Your Designs!

Handbag Designer 101 and InStyle have teamed up for the 6th Annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards, and undiscovered designers have until Saturday, April 28th to compete for one of seven different awards. Categories include Best Handmade Bag and Most Socially Responsible Bag. Also, a special Fan Favorite category will be voted on by the readers of InStyle.com, and the Best Overall Style & Design winner will have the opportunity to design a capsule collection with Kenneth Cole. Kenneth Cole is celebrating his label’s 30th birthday in a big way! This July, the brand is launching its first luxury line, Kenneth Cole Collection, which boasts men’s and women’s pieces with a sophisticated touch. “We’re in the process of elevating and returning to certain roots of the company and elements of its heritage,” Kenneth Cole told WWD. This means a commitment to high quality clothing and a emphasis on women’s accessories—including handbags and shoes! Pieces will range in price from $400 for dresses up to $900 for outerwear. Project Accessory Winner Brian Burkhardt’s Kenneth Cole Collection

Project Accessory winner Brian Burkhardt is still basking in the delight of his first season triumph. Not only did he take home the $100,000 grand prize to put towards his own line, he also got to design a four-piece capsule collection for Kenneth Cole, now in stores. “I feel very honored to have this opportunity,” Burkhardt told us at the collaboration’s launch party in New York City. The chance arose after Burkhardt won the sixth episode challenge with the unicorn clutch, shown, and bolero necklace—and then he added two more pieces after the season wrapped. “He took his own path,” Cole said of why Burkhardt rose to the top. Kenneth Cole Designed a New Red AIDS Ribbon

Project Accessory judge and amfAR Chairman Kenneth Cole gave the classic red AIDS ribbon a makeover. The designer created the reinterpretation, shown, to commemorate the discovery of the virus 30 years ago. The double-loop symbolizes a new generation of people coming together to show support, and is just one of the efforts behind the cause’s new “Coming Together” campaign. The ribbons are available starting today on kennethcole.com for $5 each, and 100% of the net profits will be donated to the MTV Staying Alive Foundation and amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research. Project Accessory, Lifetime’s new competition series is coming soon! The network just confirmed details about the details-oriented Project Runway spinoff show today, and the lineup is on-the-edge-of-our-seats good. Model, actress, and accessories designer Molly Sims will serve as both host and judge, alongside fellow judges Kenneth Cole and InStyle’s own Ariel Foxman. “InStyle readers absolutely love shoes, bags and jewelry,” Foxman says, “so it’s been thrilling to be able to find the next great accessory designer.” Lifestyle expert Eva Lorenzotti is signed on to mentor the 12 contestants vying to win.
