Park Avenue princesses and downtown nightlife queens, it’s time to show how worthy of a crown you really are! Luckily, Dauphines (that’s French for wife of the heir to throne of France) of New York’s regal headdresses are less Duchess of Windsor and more ethereal-cool.
Raised on the Upper East Side and residing in SoHo, founder, designer, and girl-about-town Summer Rej knows a thing or two about city style – and how to create pieces that not only transcend neighborhoods, they transcend time. Not to mention any unfortunate headband trend we’ve experienced so far (abusers, you know who you are!). Her adornments are more like pieces of unique and unusual jewelery than anything else. We enjoy statement necklaces around our throats – why shouldn’t our foreheads get in on some of the fun?
Using semi-precious stones, like green agate, turquoise, sparkling crystals, and bundles of pearls, Summer designs each piece to complement your locks and bring romance to an ordinary day. Bohemian or bridal, exotic or feminine, the term “head case” just took on a glamorous new meaning.
Available on Shopbop for $45-$145.
Turning out yet another classy-meets-youthful look, Emma Stone is making for ample outfit inspiration these days. At a photo call for The Amazing Spider-Man in Tokyo on Wednesday, she paired a shoe-snob favorite, Salvatore Ferragamo’s houndstooth-printed python pumps, with a pleated-and-folded Rue du Mail frock out of their Fall 2012 collection.
Appropriate the splashy orange-meets-statement shoe look for yourself with another pair of killer colorless pumps. Brian Atwood’s Maniac pump (on Net-a-Porter for $850), in spotty elaphe, makes for a two-tone shoe with maximum versatility (unlike Ferragamo’s which are so noticeable you can only milk a handful of wears). Maintain a flirty attitude with the Sunshine beaded stretch-crepe dress by Preen (on Net-a-Porter
for $652.50, from $2,175) or go a little more laid-back with Carven’s pleated, open-back dress (on Montaigne Market for $340).
Issa Stretch Knitted Dress (Blue)
On Net-a-Porter for $600.
Issa Ribbed Knitted Dress (White)
On Net-a-Porter for $585.
Issa Flared Ribbed Knitted Tank Dress (Yellow)
On Net-a-Porter for $600.
Issa Cutout Ribbed Knitted Dress (Red)
On Net-a-Porter for $650.
The European Resort collections: I could liken them to a surprise dessert, brought out on the house at a five-star restaurant. A little unexpected and thoroughly delectable (even though, after numerous courses of seasonal collections, you know you probably don’t need more treats!). This year, I’ve narrowed it down the crème de la crème. Here’s what the most masterful chefs of fashion have whipped up for 2013:
Céline: What else can anyone say about the intellectual, inspiring Phoebe Philo that hasn’t already been said? She just gets it right, every time. Juxtaposing hard, clean lines with lightly billowing bursts, she punched up graphic black and white with bold greens – and, of course, her signature leopard. Python and leather patchwork? Thoroughly fresh. She manages to make everything old look new again. Those silk scarves collecting dust in your drawers (the ones your mother’s been amassing for you since high school)? Put them to good use!
Valentino: Pop Art usually means trompe l’oeil and overt kitsch. Not when Maria Grazia and Pier Paolo put their creative minds to work! With optimism in the air, the collection brims with enchanting pastel colors and wafts of fabric as light as dreamy clouds. All the sweet softness is countered by chicly sober white collars. They took tone-on-tone dressing to another level (this is not your average monochrome), with a leopard-print pantsuit and striking Kelly green lace, lime peplum looks and hot-pink evening gowns.
Givenchy: With graphic, tribal scarf prints that are not for the faint of heart, the Givenchy woman remains stronger than ever, if not newly revitalized with a new sense of her edgy-glamorous self. She’s in a gypsy mood at the moment, ready to take on her city and explore the world. And she’s still a renegade and a rebel, mixing transfixing patterns with hardened blasts of black, cape-like slits, and warm-weather leather. Or as Tisci himself puts it, the collection is “romantic, with a sharpness.”
Up-and-comer Amber Heard is growing on me. With classic bombshell looks and a rebellious streak, I’m positive the self-possessed actress is one to watch, on and off the screen. Especially after her latest ensemble caught my eye.
Shopping at The Grove in LA recently, she whipped a slinky yet breezy BOSS Black dress into a strong day look (no easy feat when high, cascading slits are involved). I’m digging the combo of a high-drama maxi avec easy flats and a belted cardigan – so chic, so organic. Especially when topped with of-the-moment round, tortoiseshell frames.
Here’s how to cop Amber’s self-assured afternoon style for yourself:
BOSS Black Multi-Slit Crepe Maxi Dallis Dress
At Hugo Boss for $569.99 (from $795).
Brown Vintage Round Sunglasses
At Hugo Boss for $225.
Aubin & Wills Halley Open-Knit Wool-Blend Cardigan
On Net-a-Porter for $69 (from $230).
J.Crew Leather Denim Belt
At J.Crew for $48.
K. Jacques Valerie Sandal
On Farfetch for $240.
They have been spurring and standing up to trends for years now (despite the fact they’re only 25), and I am currently major style-crushing on the Olsen twins. Their look is effortlessly laidback yet calculated to accentuate their petite frames (yes, I do feel kinship due to our mutual height – or lack thereof!).
I don’t have style icons, but I have always obsessed over Carine and Kate. Now I can add Mary-Kate and Ashley to that elite list. Here, my favorite three looks from MK and Ashley through the years:
1. The look that launched a major love for the Olsens: At the Weeds premiere back in 2007, Mary Kate looked genius with a high-low mix of elegant and casual, by making worlds collide with an Alaïa skirt and American Apparel tee, then savvily adding Balenciaga shoes and the YSL muse bag. And then I fell in style love…Sexy without giving a damn!
