31 Days of Spring Cleaning: Organize Desktop Folders

A cluttered desktop is an unhappy desktop.

A cluttered desktop is an unhappy desktop. See the return of a happy, fast-moving desktop by eliminating its clutter with today's Spring cleaning tip. You may think that keeping programs and often used folders within view makes you productive, but the scattered appearance leads to a scattered work appearance. Use our tips for desktop folder organization to create a constructive atmosphere.

  • Remove software shortcuts — You think you're saving yourself a few clicks by keeping a desktop shortcut. Instead keep it clear by pinning the most used programs to your Windows taskbar or Mac dock. The program's still available with the click of a button, and your desktop is kept mess-free.
  • Frequent folder program — First of all, create folders for several often-used subjects like downloads, photos, and documents. Pin those frequent folders to the taskbar or dock by dragging them to their respective OS locations. The folders' contents are still within easy, yet invisible, clicking distance.
  • Not-so-frequent folders — Create folders for those in-between needs like bills or silly online photos, then actually use said folders. The desktop stays clear by dropping each new addition into its proper folder as it's downloaded.
  • Mind the trash can — Enhance your daily habit of folder organizing, with a weekly habit of emptying the trash or recycle bin on your desktop. Lose the images that serve no better purpose than taking up space. It'll increase productivity and streamline your workflow.

Tumblr of the Day: Photography From the National Geographic Archives

For the past 125 years, the National Geographic Society has been a champion of scientific research and education.

For the past 125 years, the National Geographic Society has been a champion of scientific research and education. The nonprofit has amassed an incredible collection of photography in that time and, in honor of its milestone anniversary, it launched Found, a Tumblr dedicated to renewing (or publishing for the first time ever!) remarkable snaps from its expansive archives.

National Geographic's FOUND logo is as meaningful as it is beautiful. Charles E. Riddiford, a National Geographic cartographer in the '30s and '40s, designed the typeface of the logo, Ludwig Light.

FOUND's photos tell remarkable stories of a world before the Internet, smartphones, and 24/7 connectivity. In the image above from February 1955, children play in an oceanside pool (now, that sounds like a fine idea).

The unbelievable photo below from 1938 shows three irresistible kittens inspecting a grouper at Marineland.

William Bonner, also known as "Guardian of the Collection" among Nat Geo folk, curates the photography archive in Washington DC. William wants to continue unearthing stories from the basement of the National Geographic headquarters, and is accepting any insights about the images at natgeofound@gmail.com.

Tell us what you find, and discover more amazing photography, GIFs, and geekery at POPSUGAR Tech on Tumblr.

31 Days of Spring Cleaning: Perform System Updates

Tech confession: a long, long time ago, I used to avoid the easy task of software updates.

Tech confession: a long, long time ago, I used to avoid the easy task of software updates. Restart the computer? That interrupts watching baby animals on YouTube. The outdated programs ended up nearly crashing the whole system and came this close to wiping my hard drive of its content. After that close call, I became a disciple of the software update, diligently downloading patches and bugs once a week. Follow these easy steps to avoid operating system frustration.

  • Mac — In the Apple Menu, select System Preferences, Software Update, and then click Check Now. While you're in that menu, go ahead and choose the appropriate options for your computer to automatically check for updates. You can set the system to search for updates daily, weekly, or monthly. If you hate coming face-to-face with decisions, the updates can be auto downloaded as well.
  • Windows — Set automatic updates in Windows by clicking Start on the toolbar, then Control Panel. Depending which Control Panel version you use, click System, then the Automatic Updates tab. Or select Performance and Maintenance, then System, and finally the Automatic Updates tab.
