History of 331 Squadron:
No.331 Squadron was formed on 21 July 1941 at Catterick as a Norwegian-manned fighter unit equipped with Hurricanes. On 15 September it became operational in northern Scotland on defensive duties, converting to Spitfires in November. These it flew south in May 1942 for sweeps over northern France, the first being flown on 6 May. As part of Second TAF, No.331 joined No.132 Wing on 31 March 1944 for the invasion of Europe, moving to Normandy in mid-August for fighter-bomber sweeps over the battle area. By October the squadron was based in the Low Countries, flying sweeps over Germany in support of the Allied armies. At the end of April 1945, it moved back to the UK and prepared to move to Norway when the Germans surrendered. After a period at Stavanger, No.331 disbanded on 21 November 1945 as an RAF unit when it passed to the control of the Royal Norwegian Air Force.
