Excerpt

Open source folks are passionate about the tools they make and want others to get involved. Yet, in the past year that I've been developing software full time, I've seen a wide variety of responses from maintainers. On one hand, I've been inspired by the Travis-CI maintainer who followed up with my bug report over several weeks, on the other hand, my pull request to JDBC has lain fallow.

Description

I’m a user of open source tools and an occasional contributor via pull requests, and as a relatively new developer, it’s very scary to hit the ‘Submit Pull Request’ button on Github.

I’ll talk about:
- Why I use open source tools
- How I contribute back to the project
- My favorite experiences with maintainers

Speaking experience

I have not given this talk before, but I'm excited about this topic! I was on a panel on 'Getting involved at open source' at the SoCal Women in Computer Science.

I've given technical talks on Ruby-related topics at the Los Angeles Ruby Conference and Silicon Valley DevFest.
