The Norwegian Archaeological Review has published several exciting articles recently that advance our understanding of openness in archaeological theory and practice. There is a gap between the ideas of broadening participation described in these papers and the limits on participation imposed by the publication choices surrounding these papers. This comment investigates the source of this gap, analyses the problems it causes, and suggests steps toward a solution.
