Uh no Koreans did not hold a general strike bc of a show, they held the strike bc of the horrible labor practices and the lack of affordable housing and access to education. These conditions have been happening for decades with the U.S. having a big hand in it

I just wanna point out that when South Koreans saw Squid Game they did a general strike, but when Americans saw Squid Game they immediately tried to do it in real life

The cont. division of Korea, U.S. neocolonialism and the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie in south still remain and are the obstacles towards peace, reunification and liberation. May the spirits of the people’s uprising live on in the struggle for liberation and reunification

Both Chun and Roh died in 2021, never facing justice for their crimes against the people. At first, they were sentenced to death and then sentenced to 17 years before being eventually pardoned under the administration of Kim Young-sam (김영삼)

Chun Doo-hwan remained in power until 1987. Roh Tae-woo replaced Chun as president in 1988 and was responsible for the mass evictions leading up to the 1988 Olympics, the sealing of a cave where the remains of the Jeju Uprising were found and his role in the Gwangju Massacre.

Under the support of the Carter administration, the military dictatorship sent in forces from the DMZ to the Gwangju to suppress the uprising. The people held on to the city for nine days. On May 27, under the support of the US, the military retook the city. Over 2000 ppl died.

For years before the uprising, labor movements, student-led movements and anti-dictatorship organizations had been struggling against the U.S. sponsored dictatorships. Thousands had died in abhorrent labor conditions, and arrested and tortured by the police.

With the election of Yoon Seok-yeol, not only his domestic policies are troubling (cutting min wage, targeting migrant and foreign workers, his support of abolishing the Ministry of Family and Gender Equality) but also of his support for bolstering Japanese and U.S. militarism.

….and the bolstering of japanese and south korean companies which the chaebols had origins to class collaborators during the colonial era. not only were there increased U.S. military presence in south Korea but also in Okinawa where U.S. military bases are positioned… (2/3)

ON THE SOUTH KOREA-JAPAN TREATY: It it’s also important to remember how with the normalization of japan-south korean relations in the 60s, it marked a return of japanese militarism in conjunction with u.s. imperialism in the region… (1/3)

This is very reminiscent of the 1965 south Korea-Japan treaty where South Korean-Japanese relations where normalized under the direction of the U.S.. This wasn’t voted by the people but by the U.S. backed military dictatorship of Park Chung-hee.

Yoon has also called for efforts to build with Japan. Yoon is open to a south Korea-Japan military alliance against north Korea, which could deploy Japanese soldiers to Korea. Yoon’s pro-Japan policy seeks to erase Japan’s colonial past. news.v.daum.net/v/202202252215

As the military continues to push out people from their homelands for land and naval bases, contaminate water sources in Hawaii, Guam and Okinawa and leave unexploded bombs in Vietnam and Laos them: hey look we have diversity

this absolutely! how else are we going to build to a better world and future if we are not connecting to the masses of people? We cannot let the ruling bourgeois class continue with their propaganda

To the people who criticize me for appearing on CNN once, or for speaking to groups organized by people I disagree with, I have one thing to say to you: marginality is too high a price to pay for purity. Our ideas need to be heard. They need to be put in front of the masses.

My developmental psychology professor is leaving after this semester so I gave her one of my Socialist Education book copies as a going-away gift. She said she is so proud of me 🥺❤️

again I want to reiterate that if we are going to discuss politics within South Korea, we need to think beyond media portrayals bc it may not be an accurate representation. Squid Game is not the magical seed towards class consciousness

no, the show was just a critique of South Korean society, that does not mean it’s inherently pro-DPRK/pro-reunification. yes the NSL is a thing but I think this claim is a bit of a stretch
Quote Tweet
Kang Sae-byeok does not answer in this scene because praising the DPRK in South Korea is a crime under the National Security Law.

happy birthday to Chairman and revolutionary Kim Il Sung! It has been a honor to engage in his work. May his revolutionary spirit live on for a free and united Korea! Out with U.S. imperialists and their collaborators!

Today, we remember not only the great Kim Il Sung—born this day in 1912—but also the continued relevance of his important theoretical work. If you have not already, be sure to check out our recent publication of his work on education and pedagogy at peacelandbread.com/books!
