Just a few years into his professional career, goalkeeper Zack Steffen has already made a big impact for both club and country. Quick reflexes and a commanding presence have earned Steffen honors playing for the Columbus Crew and looks from overseas. He received many callups for the US’s youth teams while earning his first cap in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina in January of 2018 in a match which saw many of the MNT’s most promising young players earn make their first appearances with the senior team. Steffen will take the next step in his career when he joins English Premier League side Manchester City in summer 2019.
IMMEDIATELY OBTAIN PASSPORT
A native of Downingtown, Pa., Zack started his youth career as a defender. It wasn’t until he was age 10 that he first picked up the gloves, subbing for a teammate that couldn’t make the match. He took to the position immediately and never looked back. His skills attracted the attention of U.S. scouts and his first U.S. Youth National Team invite was accompanied by a letter to his parents that read “IMMEDIATELY OBTAIN PASSPORT”. He became a regular in the U.S. YNT setup, starting in the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship and the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup. In the latter, he saved a penalty kick in the Round of 16 match against Colombia, leading the U.S. to a 1-0 victory.
Rising to the senior team, his first year with the MNT was a special one. Steffen went on to make six appearances in 2018, tying the record for most by an MNT goalkeeper in their debut year with the National Team, and was voted U.S. Soccer’s Male Player of the Year.
PRO CAREER
Steffen played two years with the Maryland Terrapins, earning accolades and all-conference team selections during his time at the university. In December 2014 he signed with German side SC Freiburg going on to log minutes with the reserve team as the club’s third choice keeper. Two years later, Steffen accepted a contract with MLS’ Columbus Crew. After a brief loan to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Steffen’s Crew breakout came in 2017, featuring prominently in the club’s first round playoff match against red-hot Atlanta United FC. Through 120 minutes of regulation he made eight saves and went on to save two attempts in the penalty shootout to help Columbus eventually advance to the Eastern Conference Final. This boosted his credentials as a reliable keeper, earning him a starting spot at the club moving forward.
With club and international accolades in his pocket, Steffen will start a new adventure when he joins English Premier League side Manchester City in summer 2019.

Listening to interviews with Steffen it is immediately clear how important his family is to him. He sports tattooso n his side reading, “Forever my Family” in German, a nod to his mother’s ancestry. The words “trust, heart, humility, and passion” also appear in German as a tribute to his four siblings. His parents nurtured his love of the game from a very early age and have been ready to guide him and offer support through every new phase of his career. The whole family routinely makes trips to Columbus to cheer him on while playing for the Crew.
