  • This still causes downtime since NameCheap's FreeDNS won't let you add your records to it until you change the domain (at the old registrar) to use FreeDNS. Dumb. Commented Feb 4, 2014 at 16:51

    Incorrect, Dan. The whole point is to transfer NS records before changing registrars; this means you have to change them at the old one. NS records remain unchanged during the max 5 day registrar acknowledgement timeout period, so do this early and test it well. There is zero downtime using this method. Commented Jan 13, 2015 at 19:42
